Heb je je ooit afgevraagd wat 'Thenga' betekent? Thenga in het Malayalam betekent kokosnoten! Wij zijn een kleine door vrouwen geleide start-up uit Kerala, India - werkend aan producten gemaakt met afgedankte kokosnootschalen.
Nu kunt u onze producten met de hand gemaakt kopen in een klein dorp in Kerala van overal ter wereld. Bedankt voor het ondersteunen van onze missie en het redden van kokosnootschalen om naar de stortplaats te gaan!
HET BEGIN
Thenga is in augustus 2019 opgericht door Maria Kuriakose. Ze kwam oorspronkelijk uit Kerala, maar migreerde naar Mumbai voor hogere studies en werk. Terwijl ze daar werkte, voelde ze de drang om terug te keren naar haar geboortestad en een bedrijf te starten dat de landbouwsector van Kerala ondersteunt. Ze besloot om zich te richten op kokosnoten, omdat dat het belangrijkste landbouwgewas in Kerala was en de staat naar kokosnoten was vernoemd! Kera betekent kokosnoten en Kerala is het land van de kokosnoten.
Na onderzoek naar verschillende kokosproducten, realiseerde ze zich dat kokosnootschil als afval werd beschouwd en meestal als brandstof werd verbrand. Traditioneel in Kerala werden kookgerei gemaakt van kokosnootschalen, en ze wilde de praktijk nieuw leven inblazen en ook meer producten met kokosnootschalen ontwikkelen. Zo ontstond 'Thenga' een merk voor huis- en keukenbenodigdheden uitsluitend gemaakt van kokosnootschalen. Vanaf ons bescheiden begin in 2019 hebben we in 2021 meer dan 24.000 kokosnootschaalproducten verkocht die lokale ambachtslieden ondersteunen en duizenden kokosnootschalen redden van weggooien op de stortplaats.

THE BEGINNING
Thenga was founded by Maria Kuriakose, in August 2019. She was originally from Kerala, but migrated to Mumbai for higher studies and work. As she was working there, she felt the urge to return to her home-town and start a business that supports the agricultural sector of Kerala. She decided to zero-in on coconuts as that was the main agricultural crop in Kerala and the state was named after coconuts! Kera means coconuts, and Kerala is the land of coconuts.
After researching on different coconut products, she realized that coconut shell was being considered waste and was usually burnt as fuel. Traditionally in Kerala cooking utensils were made from coconut shells, and she wanted to revive the practice and also develop more products with coconut shells. Thus was born 'Thenga' a brand for home and kitchen essentials solely made from coconut shells. From our humble beginning in 2019, by 2021 we have sold over 24,000 coconut shell products supporting local artisans and saving thousands of coconut shells from being discarded in the landfill.
