A propos

Dream Catcher

A little more about the family behind BowPosh.

When I first started BowPosh I was so very excited. I had a photographer friend that I was talking to about it, and she told me I needed to choose a neat, catchy name. I had no idea what I was going to call my shop on Etsy. I had been putting off starting an Etsy shop for years after a co-worker told me I should check it out when I lived in TN (Thanks Niki). The name was so weird that I wasnt sure I heard her correctly; Etsy, what is an Etsy, haha.

In 2010, my husband and I drove down to FL for my high school reunion. My husband hadnt been away from TN very much, and I was ready to leave TN so on our drive back to TN, I was on the phone giving all of our furniture and everything in the little house we had just bought away. When we hit Jackson, TN, the first stop was my job. I was a third party debt collector working 40 hours a week at the worst job I could have ever imagined so I went in and turned in my badge. My husband never went back to his job. We picked up our kids, packed up our SUV with the necessities, stored my car at my aunts rental house, and took off for the 14 hour trip back to FL. Back to FL with no jobs, one paycheck, two kids, no house, and no plan. The only one that knew was my aunt. The rest of our friends and family found out after we were back in FL. Talk about a 1974 move!

We checked into a Value Place off the interstate in Fort Myers, FL (we scoped it out on the way out of FL) and lived off of my 401K while we searched for jobs. My husband got a management job at Value Place so our rent was free and we had two suites; one that later became my work studio. I had made a few cheer bows for my daughters cheer team in TN for free to help out and they were a hit so I finally decided to start my business after having a couple of not-so-good jobs. My husband and kids fully supported me.

After days of brainstorming for a business name, I got the check mark that "BowPosh" was available. Hooray!!!! I bought the domain for .99 cents, and then realized I had absolutely no supplies to start making my items. I didnt even know how to make some of the most popular kinds of bows at the time. What was I going to do? I didnt have a lot of money because we hadnt gotten back on our feet yet so I reached out to my birth mom who sent me $50 dollars (My first investor, lol). I went to a local craft store and bought $100 worth of ribbon for $50 from a half off sale. All ribbon, nothing else (I already had a sewing machine, thread, glue, and other items). Then, I spent days and nights teaching myself how to make certain items, watching videos, practicing, getting frustrated, starting over, and just on and on and on.

A few years had gone by and we were doing very, very well until my husband lost a job he had after we had moved to Bonita Springs, FL (VP sold and restaffed). It was a downhill spiral after that, and eventually after supporting the family living in hotels, it had to come to an end. It was too difficult to carry my supplies around with us, and at some points we didnt even know where we were going to sleep the next night or where we were going to go that day unless I got a sale. A sale would come in right before checkout time from either BowPosh or my other shop. It was nerve racking to say the least. Finally, in 2014, we found ourselves on the streets in Bonita. Literally. This lasted for a few days, but our kids still went to school, and I still went to work (I got a management job to try to get things going again, but we were too behind).

No one had a clue what we were going through for years, and only a handful knew (before I wrote this). We were turned away from a shelter and the others wanted to split us up. Our family motto: Never separate. We ended up in a shelter in Fort Myers, FL. By this time, BowPosh had been put on hold on Etsy, and I was absolutely crushed. I had such a hard time with this, and accepting everything that had led up to this point in our lives. I was hurting for my kids, embarrassed, and almost lost every ounce of drive I had ever had even though it seemed like nothing was wrong.

During all of this, I was still a full time student in college so the stress levels were almost unbearable. I think back, and we made it by the grace of God. We were in the shelter for about 9 months before we finally got our own place again; since early 2010. We have worked our way back slowly, and I never stopped talking about BowPosh. It didnt matter if it wasnt in full swing, I never stopped talking about it. I never stopped making things whenever I could. I did custom orders throughout every situation. Now, we are back, and we are incredibly grateful for our loyal fans, and supporters.

We look forward to continuing to create pieces for special events around the world, and growing so that we can continue to help others any way we can!

Our passion and mission is creating smiles.

Thank you so very much <3.
