This was my second purchase from Kristen, both custom orders, and I enjoyed (and appreciated it!) it as much this time as the first. The quilt is just absolutely gorgeous just like I knew it would be. I've used my first rag quilt for several years and it's still like brand new, I have no doubt this one will hold up every bit as well. I could rattle on for hours here, bottom line, I absolutely would highly recommend working with Kristen, you won't be disappointed!

A propos

Handmade in New Jersey

How did Kristin’s Country Home come about?
I was born a creative person and my parents were very supportive of this growing up. I was always making something and dreamed of having my own store one day. My sister taught me the basics of sewing and from then on I experimented and learned new techniques. When a friend told me about Etsy, I knew I had to take the plunge.

How do you come up with your designs?
I am constantly thinking up new designs. When I'm driving down the road, when I'm making dinner, it's a constant thought process. I'm also very lucky to have great customers who inspire me with new ideas and fabric combos.

What is your day to day like?
I’m usually up by 6am. After coffee I work on any shipping that needs to be done. After shipping I usually start to work on quilting. I quilt at the machine for hours a day. Any finished pieces go into the wash for that first, important wash. Before ending my work day I try to cut out anything needed for the next day. I typically work about 50 hours a week. I try to take Saturdays off but I do answer emails.

What would you say is your biggest challenge?
Most definitely time. When I was younger people would say “I don’t have enough time”. I never understood that saying. Now, as a business owner, designer, quilter, wife, and mother I realize what they mean. I’ve had to learn how to be more efficient in my business so that I can meet consumer demands. I've also recently had to start thinking about how I can expand in the future as I'm growing out of my current work area.

Have any of your products ever been featured?
Yes, I was excited when the set designer for the movie Cowgirls 'n Angels contacted me to purchase my cowboy quilt for the movie. It seemed like it took forever for that movie to come out. My quilt is shown toward the end of the movie in a couple of scenes. I watched it almost all the way through thinking it didn't make the cut, but then there it was. I may have screamed and jumped up and down. In a dignified way of course! One of my quilts was also seen on the show Hart of Dixie, season 2 episode Alabama. I also sold my blue homespun quilt to the set designer for the Broadway show If/Then. I've never seen the show, so I'm not sure if they wound up using it.

What do you see for the future of your business?
I dream big!!! I've always wanted to have a brick and mortar country store! Since I was a child this has been a fantasy. I picture a store with a huge studio in the back where customers can see the quilting and handmade process happening. I'd like to be able to hire local craftsmen/women to work with me to continue the tradition of handmade in our community. In the near future I will be starting to attend a few shows. I love the internet, but nothing beats meeting customers face to face.

Finally, what would you want your customers to know?
I cherish each and every order I get for my handmade items! I find it humbling that people like my stuff! I put a lot of detail and care into each item from construction to packaging and I hope customers can see my appreciation. :)
