Handmade Goods Inspired by the Ancient World

Hello and welcome to Old Earth Trading Company!

This shop began with Hnefatafl, an ancient game of strategy (similar to chess), played by the Vikings. After figuring out with my nephew how to play the game, I made him his own Hnefatafl board to play on. I've always enjoyed woodworking, and had so much fun designing that first board that I decided to open up a shop.

Hnefatafl is pretty obscure (had I not seen it played at a Viking festival, I may never have come across it myself), so here's a quick note about it:

The game board is made up of squares (like a checker or chess board), with stones set up in a specific pattern. The object of the game is for the central piece, the Kingstone, to overcome his attackers and escape to one of the corners of the board with the help of his guards. Of course, a little book of rules is provided with each board, so more details can be found there.

Hnefatafl is a game that is simple to learn but never dull to play; there are many strategies and tactics to try, and each game will test your mental agility. It's really a fun (and certainly unique) addition game night!

Since opening the shop, I've added other things I've always loved to make: jewelry, warm knit hats, and even painted glass vases and candle holders.

A lot of time, care, and love goes into each of the items I make, and all of them are made to last. I hope they will bring years of fun, enjoyment, and good memories to those who receive them.

Thanks for stopping by my little shop!

Blessings,
Alison

Hello and welcome to Old Earth Trading Co.!

All hnefatafl board designs are original, drawn and burned by hand onto either a pine or basswood surface. Each board is carefully painted with wood stain and sealed with a protective finish. Small rubber feet are affixed to the bottom of every board to protect it (and any beloved surfaces it may be set upon) from scuff marks.

Included with each game board is a little hand-bound book of instructions on how to play hnefatafl, as well as a small mesh bag filled with glass taflstones.

So what is this “hnefatafl” thing, anyway?

Hnefatafl is an ancient game of strategy played by the Old Norse. The object of the game is for the central piece, the kingstone, to overcome his attackers and escape to one of the corners of the board with the help of his guards.

Often called a predecessor of chess, hnefatafl is a game that is simple to learn but never dull to play; there are many strategies and tactics to try, and each game will test your mental agility.
