Nice earrings. I love the versatility of being able to wear the hoops with the "pendant charm" or without it or wearing the pendant charm as a necklace. Beautiful contemporary design -- excellent customer service and really nice presentation and gift packaging, too. An all-around great experience with this shop. Highly recommend and will be back for additional pieces.

Beautiful necklace. The sunstone is a very pretty glittery rust-orange gem. Love the presentation, too.

Design-centric Jewelry for the Quixotic Modern Muse

Hi, I'm Dianna. I'm the maker, designer, and creative behind Soft Gold Co, a made-by-hand line of modern, art-inspired, design-centric jewelry. Grounded by minimalist metalwork and inspired by unique materials, I strive to make objects that resonate, pieces you'll love and wear and make your own.

My aesthetic is rooted in a high regard for the basic tenets of design; I draw endless inspiration from form, line, color, texture, hue. I seek visual balance and respond to cohesion and awkward juxtaposition alike.

I'm inspired by our physical world: by architecture, object design, urban landscapes and textures, but also my inner world, that place where intuition, memory and sensitivity to materials guides my process of play at the bench. I find this inner inspiration leads to pieces that reverberate with their need to be extant, pieces that embody my gratification in having made them. The process of moving an idea from concept to physical object–figuring out how to make it work–that's what I'm in this for. The problem solving. That's where I get my pleasure and satisfaction: the first time a piece comes to life.

While I don't disregard the power of an "aha" moment, for me it's truly about reaching that almost meditative place where my creative process takes over, everything else drops away–time, sound, my surroundings–and what's left is flow. It's about getting to that place where I'm so present in my making that the present falls away and I am free. It's hard to describe, but it's the epitome of euphoria for me. It's the place I want to go whenever I sit down to make, but that doesn't always come. You can't force it. As such, when it's there, it is magic.

It's my raison d'être. My muse.

My path to jewelry designer was a circuitous one. I studied graphic design and sculpture and then picked up and left for Europe. I spent my 20s in Italy, where I learned to live in the moment and for the moment. I followed my heart fully (if not always my head). I lived a life both fast and slow. It was fearless, it was romantic. It shaped me.

I have always been after a certain kind of freedom, ever seeking a life without rules and boundaries, one contrary to convention–unique, open, malleable. But there was something missing from my life in Florence. I worked in the handbag design studio of a major multi-national fashion brand...and I learned all about the type of things I absolutely did not want to make. I was only putting a fraction of myself into the world; I was making nothing, creating nothing of real substance. After a time, it was clear I was more hollow than whole; my freedom was limited by all that I wasn't doing. And it hurt. I returned to America and I changed that.

I came back seeking something else, a more true and genuine form of fulfillment. I wanted to make. I needed to make. I started Soft Gold in my sister's garage in the Fall of 2011 and opened on Etsy in the spring of 2012.

Soft Gold was born.

These are the materials–tangible and not–which drive me to create work and be the muse of my own life. Making jewelry is my passion because it melds so many of my passions: design, process, problem solving. Most of all, it allows me to shape my present and my future with my own hands. It has given me a new freedom.

I hope you find something in my work that speaks to you. Because then your story joins my story, and I'd love that.

My plater is the industry standard when it comes to high quality, luxury gold vermeil. I am so confident in the quality of their work that I guarantee it, and will offer to re-plate should that ever be required of your piece.

Wait, you guarantee your plated pieces?

I stand by the quality of my gold vermeil and plated pieces, so much so that I guarantee them and offer to re-plate should that ever be required of your piece. (Frankly, if you wear it so much that this would be needed, I'll take it as the ultimate compliment.)

For reference:

14k GOLD VERMEIL / True vermeil is defined by U.S. law as no less than 2.5µ of gold layered over sterling silver. Vermeil is 50x heavier than standard gold-plating.

HANDMADE & PROFESSIONALLY-PLATED / Meticulously made by hand, then plated by professionals with a long history of working with jewelry artisans. This is NOT the "gold flash" plating you might have in mind. Instead, each of my pieces is finished with a heavy layer of fine karat gold. Nickel-free.

Can you tell me about the other materials you use?

RECYCLED .925 STERLING SILVER / I choose to use eco silver in my pieces, recycled and made in the USA. All gold-vermeil pieces are hand-fabricated first from eco silver.

14K GOLD-FILLED / Made with a substantial layer of gold (1/20th total weight) bonded to a base metal core using heat & pressure. Can be soldered and handled similarly to solid metals. The downside? Many metalsmithing techniques would expose the base-metal core, and so its use can be somewhat limiting. With care, gold filled pieces will last many years.

How should I care for my Soft Gold jewelry?

Jewelry is by nature delicate, so please handle your new pieces with relative care. If a piece requires repair due to workmanship, please let me know. I will be happy to repair as needed, at no cost to you beyond return shipping.

To maintain the finish on pieces, I do not recommend wearing jewelry in water, while sleeping or when exercising. Storage in a cool, dry place is recommended. Steamy bathrooms...not so much.

How should I clean my jewelry?

STERLING SILVER / Silver will develop a patina; it is its nature! Pieces can easily be brought back to a bright sheen using polishing cloths (I'm partial to the Sunshine brand).

14k GOLD & GOLD FILLED / Microfiber is a great all-around cloth, but gold and gold-filled pieces will gleam if polished with a Sunshine cloth.

14k GOLD VERMEIL & PLATED / Microfiber cloths are the best, especially those with a very smooth weave. I do not recommend using polishing cloths impregnated with polishing compounds on vermeil or plated pieces.

STONE-SET PIECES / Gently clean with a microfiber cloth.

How can I determine my ring size?

The best way to get a precise measure is to go to a local jeweler and have them size you. Otherwise, I would recommend purchasing a metal ring sizer, to get the most accurate measure (and to ensure confident online purchases in the future). As a measurement, it is very hard to accurately DIY, and the apps and printable ones online are largely unreliable.

Bear in mind that your knuckles pose less resistance to thin stacking rings, so for skinny rings I tend to recommend sizing down 1/4 to 1/2 size in comparison to wider bands and statement rings, which need to be a touch larger to fit over knuckles.

Any tips for figuring out my cuff size?

To ensure a custom fit, wrap a measuring tape or length of string around your wrist, to determine circumference. If using the string method, measure the string with a ruler. :)

As I add to this measurement to accommodate the gap in the cuff, a snug measurement is best. Six inches (15cm) is average, and suits most women.
