Additional required information

When purchasing an international label, you must supply the total package weight, as well as a customs description that accurately represents all the items in your order.

When you create your label, we will use the information provided to pre-fill your customs form with the item description(s), weight, and quantity. Package weights cannot be fractional and should be rounded up to the nearest whole number.

You may also enter an optional tariff number along with your customs information. The inclusion of a tariff number may reduce processing times at customs, as duties and taxes will be charged based on the tariff code. Find a Tariff number for your item(s) here.

If your buyer has provided an address that is not in English, please contact them directly for an English translation of their address before purchasing your shipping label.

Additionally, it's only possible to purchase an international shipping label with an address bearing a first and last name. Otherwise, a package risks being rejected by customs inspectors.

Number of shipping label copies

The customs authorities in each destination country determine how many copies of the shipping label, including the Legal Terms and Conditions, are required.

Note: The number also varies by origin country.

Fold and insert label(s)

  • Insert your printed label(s) in the clear plastic pouch on your package so that the barcode portion can be read and scanned.

  • Be sure to include the required number of printed label page copies—also known as air waybills—which varies according to the shipment’s origin, destination, and the FedEx service you select.

Note: Your phone number will appear on all international shipping labels. We collect this information upfront to ensure that it's available when these shipping services are selected.

Customs description

If your order only has one item, we’ll automatically fill out the customs description with that item’s title as long as it is fewer than 50 characters in length. You can edit this by clicking on the field under Customs Description.

If you've set a default customs description, it will appear as the default on all of your labels, regardless of item quantity. You can define up to five items that appear on your customs form. This includes the description, quantity, weight, and monetary value.

All international commercial invoices will always be sized 8.5 x 11 inches, regardless of printing method.

To print out your customs form(s), go to Shop Manager > Orders > View shipping labels and click the Purchased labels tab.

Then, click on one of your order receipts to view the PDF version of your label and commercial invoice(s) before printing.

Customs value

The value of your item will be declared on your form. We’ll automatically fill this in based on the order total including any discounts. We do not include shipping or tax charges when calculating the declared value, only the items' price and quantity.

Customs forms

Depending on the mail class, package type, and destination, Etsy will print your shipping label with the correct number of Commercial Invoice copies. It is possible that multiple labels will print as well, should the country you are shipping to require multiple shipping labels. Some countries require other additional forms. Check here for further details.

The information provided on other international shipping documents must correspond to the Commercial Invoice. The same Commercial Invoice is used on all international shipments. Always include one copy of your Commercial Invoice inside the package, as well as any additional copies in a clear FedEx international pouch outside the package. The FedEx international pouch contains a ziplock and a purple seal. Always reference the tracking number on the Commercial Invoice.

You can read more about the required Customs Forms by visiting the FedEx international documents page.

Also, you can purchase additional labels for an international order from the order’s receipt page for up to two months after the initial label purchase.

Note: Deliveries are contingent on Customs clearance, and estimated transit times will be provided.

Automated Export System/Internal Transaction Number

When your package's value is equal to or more than $2,500.00 USD, an export license number and additional documentation may be required by the U.S. Census Bureau. This is specified on the customs form as an Automated Export System/Internal Transaction Number (AES/ITN).

For most items with a value under $2,500.00 USD, and for most destination countries, an AES/ITN is not required and an AES Exemption applies. The AES Exemption number will be automatically printed on the customs forms for any shipping label purchased through Etsy where the value is under $2,500.00 USD.

For packages valued at or over $2,500.00 USD, the AES/ITN/Exemption number will be left blank on any shipping label purchased through Etsy. In this case, it will be up to you to supply a valid AES/ITN for your package.
