How Google Shopping Ads Work

Google Shopping is an optional paid advertising tool that allows you to reach new buyers outside of the Etsy marketplace. With Google Shopping, you set a daily budget and we optimize and manage your campaign.

How Google chooses which ads to show

Etsy submits the listings you want to promote to Google using data that Google can read and process. When a shopper searches for items on Google, the search engine looks for items that most closely match their search.

Google evaluates the placement of products in search results using an auction-based format. This means that each of your promoted products are assigned bid amounts. Each time a buyer clicks on one of your ads, the bid amount for that product will be deducted from your daily budget.

Our bid management system will automatically determine the optimal bid amounts for your products to ensure you receive competitive placement while taking into account the daily budget you set.

When it comes to the placement of your ads, Google takes the following into account:

  • The bid amount for your product

  • How relevant your product is to a shopper's search

The products that win the auction are shown in search results on Google.com and Google.com/shopping. If you're promoting multiple products in the Google Shopping ads section, you might see more than one of your ads within a single search. This is because Google tries to show the most relevant results to shoppers.

If you aren't seeing your own ads

There are a few reasons why you may not see your own ads in Google:

  • Another ad had a more competitive bid and relevance score for that particular search result.

  • The keywords in your listing don't match the shopper's search terms.

  • Your item already sold

Where Google displays your ads

Your ads can be found in the following places on Google:

  • Google Search: These ads will appear next to search results and will be separate from text-only ads.

  • Google Shopping: Ads will only appear in Google Shopping for select countries (United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia).

  • Google search partner websites: Your ads also have the potential to appear on Google's search partner websites, which includes Image Search on Google.

When ads are shown

Since your ads have the potential to appear in any relevant search, we don't have a way to spread your ads throughout the day. Additionally, once your budget has been used for the day, your listings will no longer be promoted until your budget resets the following day.

If you find that you're using up your budget too early in the day, you can always increase it. Learn more about managing your Google Shopping campaign.

Invalid clicks

When Google determines that clicks are invalid, they try to automatically filter them so you’re not charged for those clicks. If they find that invalid clicks have escaped automatic detection, you may be eligible to receive a credit for those clicks. These credits are called "invalid activity" adjustments.
