2017 Shipping Rate Changes and Updates for US Postal Service, FedEx, and Canada Post

In January 2017, the United States Postal Service, FedEx, and Canada Post are making changes to shipping rates and some service offerings. Details and rate comparison charts for services available through Etsy Shipping Labels are shown below. Because Etsy receives discounts for sellers on most shipping services, the rates you see may be lower than those you experience at retail counters.

United States Postal Service

2017 rate changes to USPS mail classes will be effective as of January 22, 2017. These changes will be reflected in any postage purchased through Etsy Shipping Labels as of that date. Purchasers of postage through the USPS can expect to see a 4.1% increase on average for domestic First Class packages, 3.9% for domestic Priority Mail packages, and 3.4% for domestic Priority Mail Express packages.

FedEx

2017 rate changes to FedEx shipping services will be effective as of January 2, 2017.

These changes will be reflected on packages shipped through Etsy Shipping Labels as of that date. Those who purchase FedEx shipping services can expect to see a 3.9% increase on average for domestic and international FedEx Express rates. Domestic FedEx Ground service will increase by an average of 4.9%.

In addition to rates, there will also be changes to pricing on FedEx’s fees and surcharges. Here are a few of the most common examples and how they’re different in 2017:

In addition to changes in rates, please also be aware that the formula by which dimensional weight is calculated is changing. This will mean an overall increase in price for packages rated this way.

In 2016, dimensional weight was calculated by FedEx as: length x width x height / 166. In 2017 it will be calculated as: length x width x height / 139. See here for FedEx's dimensional weight calculator.

Canada Post

The 2017 rate changes to Canada Post’s shipping services will be effective as of January 16, 2017. These changes will be reflected in any shipping labels purchased through Etsy Shipping Labels as of that date. Sellers who purchase Canada Post Shipping Labels on Etsy should expect to see an average increase of 3% in shipments to the US, 4% in domestic shipping rates, 3% in international rates.

If you currently purchase Etsy Shipping Labels for Canada Post services, the rate comparison chart below will help you understand the rate increases. You may want to use it to better prepare your shop and your listings for these changes. Base shipping costs are shown and do not include taxes and fuel surcharge amounts or any additional fees applied at the time of purchase. These rates are based on frequently shipped parcel weights and shipping locations for all shipping services that are currently offered. All examples below are shown in CAD:

In addition, you should also be aware of the following key changes for Canada Post Shipping Labels:

  • Priority is no longer available for shipments to air stage offices.

  • Signature confirmation is now required on shipments for which $200 or more of liability coverage is purchased. There is no additional charge for Priority, but the standard Signature Confirmation charge will apply for Xpresspost and Expedited Parcel (or, Regular Parcel if purchased at a retail counter).
