Trabalho em um estúdio de bronze há alguns anos. No primeiro mês, eu cortava as chapas de bronze no formato desejado usando diferentes ferramentas elétricas e jogava a serragem no lixo. Desde que comecei a me dedicar seriamente à arte, detesto a ideia de jogar materiais fora, até mesmo tinta seca e pequenos pedaços de papel. Um dia, levei um saco plástico com fecho para o trabalho e, depois de cortar bronze o dia todo, havia um pequeno monte de pó de bronze saindo do compartimento de poeira da serra de fita. Juntei tudo no saco e levei para casa. Eu ainda não sabia o que faria com ele, mas não queria que fosse mais um item para encher nossos aterros sanitários. No ano passado, fiz alguns desses colares para pessoas que conheço. Foram um sucesso! Continuei coletando a serragem de bronze e essa é uma das maneiras que encontrei para reutilizar o que seria lixo.

I’ve been working in a bronze studio for a few years. The first month or so, I’d cut the sheets of bronze to shape using different power tools and sweep the sawdust into the trash. From the time I began to seriously create art, I’ve hated the idea of throwing materials away, even dried out paint and small bits of paper. One day, I brought a ziplock bag to work, and after cutting bronze for the day, there was a small pile of bronze dust spilling from the dust chamber of the band saw. I swept it into the bag and brought it home. I didn’t yet know what I’d do with it, but I didn’t want it to be yet another thing filling our landfills. Last year, I made a few of these necklaces for people I know. They were a hit! I’ve continued to collect the bronze sawdust, and this is one of the ways I’ve decided to reuse what would have been refuse.
