Knitting pattern: Burren Chunky Beanie. The Burren is a beautiful area in Ireland characterised by an ancient limestone landscape, and is visible across the sea from the Aran Islands, Ireland (where I come from!) This chunky knit hat is perfect for coping with the strong Atlantic winds!
As a knitter from the Aran Islands, I love adapting the Aran style to suit modern knitters. Here, I have taken a classic Aran style cable pattern and adapted the motif to work it in the round, on one size of circular needle. The finished hat is seamless, with the cables flowing from brim to crown without interruption.
The cabling pattern is not overly complicated; working a 8 stitch and 8 row repeat - I would consider this a pattern suitable for improving and intermediate knitters.
The hat is knit in the round, using US10/6mm circular knitting needles, and 1 skein of 100g chunky yarn. Notions required are: Cable needle, tapestry needle (for weaving in ends), and stitch marker (to mark start of round).
One size is given, to suit an adult head, but the pattern is easy to adjust as the cable pattern repeats over 8 stitches - if you want a smaller hat, cast on 8 stitches less; for a larger hat, cast on an extra 8 or 16 stitches. The pattern is also easy to adjust in length if you want a slouchier size - just work more repeats of the cable pattern before starting the crown decreases.
I also have this pattern available to suit worsted or Aran weight yarn (over here: https://www.etsy.com/ie/listing/930070519/knitting-pattern-beanie-hat-burren?click_key=ee8141aa8fc65be9005615a416c08ee21072ca63%3A930070519&click_sum=cee5b53f&ref=shop_home_active_8 )
The hat is seamless, as it is knit in the round, and is super soft and comfortable to wear. The beanie measures around 18 inches (47 cm) in circumference (flat, unworn) and 8 inches/21cm in height from brim to crown.
The pattern has been test knitted, and the test knitters found that it was quick to work up - a bonus for any gift knitter!
Thank you for looking; I have many more original knitting patterns available in my shop, which are suitable for all levels of knitters!
