Description

This is a felt making kit to make a scale model of the planets of our solar system.* Use the softest merino sheep's wool to learn to make felt in three different ways - felting balls, felting around an object and flat felting. Make a set of planets to hang in your room.

**SHIPPING INFO: This item falls between two weight categories, but is mostly the cheaper one, so please note I will refund any extra shipping costs.

In this kit you will find:

* A jam-packed seven page tutorial on felt-making with full step-by-step instructions of how to make each planet including detailed photos.

* Plenty of high quality (70s) Merino wool - a fine soft wool, super-easy to felt with - all neatly packed in separate paper bags containing the wool for each planet to avoid any confusion!

* 2 cotton paper balls and 2 larger polystyrene balls.

* Bubble-wrap, screws and nylon stockings for wrapping the larger planets in to felt.

All this comes in a large high quality jute shopping bag with reinforced woven handles for you to reuse.

I use the best quality natural materials I can source in my kits, with the environment in mind. The bubble-wrap is recycled and recyclable, I use paper bags instead of plastic and the best quality merino wool. I had to compromise and use polystyrene balls to stay true to making the planets to scale - there was no other available form for the huge larger planets.

For the kit I have chosen to represent the planets in their true colours (at least as we would perceive them from Earth) and given explanations of what makes each planet the colour it is.

From this kit:
* You will learn how to make felt balls, flat felt and how to felt around an object.
* You will learn about each planet: its relative size to the Earth and the other planets, the relative distances between each of the planets, the shapes of their orbits and the compostition of the planets. For example: ammonia gas causing the blue tones on Uranus; or a dark spot on Neptune showing a storm larger than planet Earth; or high speed winds causing patterns in Jupiter's clouds.
* You will produce a scale model of the 8 planets of our solar system, with an option to include Pluto too. The largest planet is 11cm/c.4" diameter and Earth is c.1cm/0.5" diameter.

At the end I have given instructions on hanging your planets with an exercise to map out the solar system. They also make a great mobile.

This is an excellent kit for anyone wanting to learn felting while learning more about our Universe. It is suitable for adults or older children.

You will need:
Soap, hot water and towel
Rolling pin, rubber bands
Compass, ruler and paper
Needle, thread and scissors
Darning needle, pins, screwdriver (optional)

About me:
I am a felt-maker and sculptor with 19 years experience felting, and 16 years experience teaching a range of crafts. I make all the kits in my studio at home using high-quality materials, natural and locally sourced where possible and assembled in a smoke-free environment.

I usually ship within two working days of ordering.
