Announcement    A UK artist currently based in Stavanger, Norway having previously worked in the UK, South Africa and The Netherlands.
My ‘go to’ medium is oil however I’m painting in acrylic, pastel and watercolour at the moment with lots of sketching and even the odd egg tempera piece.
My studio set-up here in Norway is the best I’ve ever had and I’m delighted when I’m productive.
The landscapes of Norway are stunning and my wonderful plein air box will be busy but I’m sure my dog will enjoy curling up in the studio too.

Painter! I mainly use oils, for landscape, portrait, figure and still life original artwork.

I’ve painted all my life and all over the world while doing other jobs. I spent a long time painting in the United Kingdom, then a while in South Africa and then The Hague in the Netherlands. I enjoyed every minute because it was all very inspiring.

I’m living in Stavanger Norway at the moment (we got here late February 2018) and have never been to a place where I’ve felt more inspired to paint, everywhere I look I see a great composition, beautiful colours and a unique Scandinavian light. It doesn’t take long to become obsessive despite the cold. Nowadays I paint a lot outside as well as in my studio and I’m broadening the use of medium I get involved with. Norway in the late winter lends itself so well to watercolour and the gear I need to paint or sketch with it slips into the backpack I use when out on long walks with my dog (as well as a flask of hot tea and some extra clothes). I really enjoy plein air painting in several forms, my wife got me a plein air oil painting box and that was a major game changer in the type of work I produce and the personal enjoyment I get from painting, I would recommend it to anyone.
I’m very fortunate that people now buy my work (even directly from me while I’m painting them outdoors) and often commission me - so here I am.

Painting takes me to another place (it’s nice there) and there is a bit of me in all my work. I mostly use oils, sometimes acrylic or even pastels. I know I mentioned watercolour however oil painting is my favourite and I like many genres including impasto, alla prima, some abstract or semi-abstract and now I go and stand outside in all weathers with my pochade box on a tripod. I can’t emphasise enough how it’s the best way to experience painting - the quality of light and colour beats any photo or print and there is always a challenge to capture the scene in a relatively short time. There will never be a time when I stop learning and there are so many things I’d like to try, framing and encaustic painting are great examples!

I’d love to hear from you, what you like or dislike and why, if you have any ideas for commissions or bespoke work I’m always very interested in exploring them.

Frequently asked questions
Is your work framed?

Not usually however I can provide cut mounts for smaller pieces on linen paper although unframed work cuts postage and packaging costs and allows new owners to explore framing options with experienced and skilful picture framers.

Custom and personalised orders

I am very happy to take on commissions. Before doing so it is always best to get some dialogue regarding size and subject as well as medium used and painting style to be adopted.

Care instructions

Pastel work has been fixed before posting however touching the work surface is definitely not recommended. Oil paintings can be varnished on request although ageing the painting for several months to a year depending on paint thickness is recommended before varnish is applied. This means oils are posted unvarnished. The nature of acrylic paint means it dries very quickly and can easily be varnished on request.

Sizing details

A lot of my work is done in the open and the plein air pochade box I currently use stores 9 x 12 inch canvas panels do that tends to be a standard plein air size. I also make oil sketches on 12 cm square linen paper on site or in the studio which is a second standard size I use. Having said that I have always worked on a variety of sized canvasses, papers and boards and continue to do so. I always provide individual painting dimensions on their listing details.

Is your artwork original?

Yes, I work from life, often out in the open and there are no duplicates made. You may even find a grain of sand on my beach paintings!
