I'm a maker, love to sew, design and am lost without at least a dozen pencils and lots of blank pages and I have a childlike obsession with crayons. It was a natural progression that influenced me to study fashion, design and drawing. Opposing my scribbling personality is the effort I put into drafting a really accurate pattern. Luckily I own a cad program which makes checking distances and lengths a pleasure. I have used Illustrator to make patterns and sometimes use it to blend my accurate patterns from cad, I prefer to keep Illustrator for clear diagrams and laying out.
Its so important to get your designs down on paper so I perfected the art of designing by scribbling and doodling, my drawings start off quite small and could be anywhere, the margins of my notebook, sticky notes and even on the back of envelopes. Rather than spend hours re-working these (its the idea I need) I clip them and paste them into my design book, this way the creativity flows.
Next I delve into my treasure trove of fabrics and cut out and sew so the drawing becomes flesh! Tweaking takes a while, I have to be disciplined and stick to my original idea, not always easy as other possibilities pop in and out of my head while still working on the original.
What really brings me down to earth is teaching sewing skills to beginners and then bringing these beginners to a place where they gain confidence and tackle new concepts with ease. I love to show them how to use all the little gadgets on their sewing machines, (I use my microwave for baking cakes) I need to show all the possibilities a machine has to offer. Buttonholes are magical - I'm quite convinced, you would not believe the joy knowing how to use this feature brings - I'm constantly being blessed with ooohs and aaahs.
