This Contemporary Figurative portrait painting by Juliana Coles will give a vibrant contemporary look to any room! Notice that even the sides are painted in this square painting.

Hammam, in many cultures, is the bathhouse. Sloughing off dead skin is the metaphor for releasing that which holds us back; allowing the dead to die and letting go all that no longer serves a purpose in our lives. This painting, completed in January 2018, is based on imagery created while at an artist residency at Green Olive Arts in Tetuoan, Morocco. I also added portraits from my figure drawing group, Morocco patterned stencils, collage items gathered while in Morocco, and of course, hand lettering. There is so much detail and layering in this painting; you can look at it for years and always notice something different. My Artist Residency in Morocco was a life changing experience and this painting investigates some of those life lessons and how they continue to unfold.
