Crescendo negli anni '90 nello stato pieno di arte e musica del Bengala, sono stato nutrito con una dieta quotidiana di leggende fantasy e folklore magico. Questo mondo era pieno di ricche sfumature di immaginazione mentre mia nonna mi cullava a dormire con racconti semi-dimenticati di antichi dei e delle loro epopee.... le parole che dipingono un ricco immaginario di energie cosmiche trascendentalmente belle, esseri nobili ed eroici e il puro amore, la bellezza e la generosità della natura umana.
Ho iniziato la mia versione di raccontare queste storie tramite scarabocchi a matita e disegni a pastello sul retro dei quaderni ...... Jatayu alato cerca freneticamente di salvare Sita catturata, Garuda che vince trionfalmente Amrit o il Nettare degli Dei, i cigni celesti nell'epica storia d'amore di Nala Damayanti e molti altri.... il tutto disegnato con il vigore (e l'esperienza!) di un bambino di 10 anni. L'amore per la mitologia è diventato più forte ogni anno che passava mentre divoravo storie non solo dalle antiche epopee dell'India, ma aggiungevo leggende greche, norrene, celtiche e azteche alla mia biblioteca mentale in continua espansione.
La vita universitaria nell'illustre National Institute of Fashion Technology (New Delhi, classe 2003), ha stuzzicato il mio appetito per il folklore mentre documentavo mestieri dimenticati e rituali di narrazione in alcuni degli angoli culturalmente più ricchi dell'India ... tra cui Nathdwara in Rajasthan, Kangra e Chamba Valley in Himachal, Sriperumbudur in Andhra Pradesh per citarne alcuni. Ed è qui che ho scoperto un altro grande amore della mia vita.... la favolosa tradizione del ricamo a mano. La pura complessità e ricchezza del ricamo a mano indiano risale a poche migliaia di anni fa ed è ineguagliabile in tutto il mondo! Soprattutto nei tempi moderni, quando il fast fashion e i social media di 15 secondi dominano virtualmente, mi innamoro un po 'di più ogni singolo giorno dello splendore senza tempo e senza età di un'abilità che richiede anni e anni per acquisire e si traduce nella creazione di qualcosa di così dolorosamente bello, che porta un nodo alla gola.
Il concetto di amalgamare i due è stata la progressione più naturale .... l'amore infantile e il timore reverenziale delle leggende si fondono perfettamente con anni di ricerca dettagliata e abilità tecnica acquisite nel corso degli anni.
Magicsimsim deriva dall'antica espressione talmudica "šem-šamáįm" che significa "Nel nome del Cielo" e per coincidenza sembra essere un'allitterazione del mio nome. È anche chi sono, cosa sogno, da dove vengo, chi amo, chi ho perso, cosa ho visto e cosa potrei diventare, un giorno.
Growing up in the 90’s art and music filled state of Bengal, I was fed on a daily diet of fantasy legends and magical folklore. This world was filled with the rich hues of imagination as my grandmother would lull me to sleep with half forgotten tales of ancient Gods and their epics.... the words painting a rich imagery of transcendentally beautiful cosmic energies, noble and heroic beings and the sheer love, beauty, and generosity of human nature.
I started my own version of retelling these stories via pencil scribbles and crayon drawings on the back pages of notebooks ......winged Jatayu frantically trying to rescue captured Sita, Garuda triumphantly winning Amrit or the Nectar of Gods, the celestial swans in Nala Damayanti’s epic love story and many more.... all drawn with the single-minded vigor (and expertise!) of a 10-year-old. The love for mythology grew stronger with each passing year as I devoured stories from not only the ancient epics of India, but added Greek, Norse, Celtic, Aztec legends to my ever-expanding mental library.
College life in the illustrious National Institute of Fashion Technology (New Delhi, class of 2003), whetted my appetite for folklore as I documented forgotten crafts and story telling rituals in some of the culturally richest corners of India... including Nathdwara in Rajasthan, Kangra and Chamba Valley in Himachal, Sriperumbudur in Andhra Pradesh to name a few. And this is where I discovered another great love of my life.... the fabulous tradition of hand embroidery. The sheer intricacy and richness of Indian hand embroidery dates back a few thousand years and is unmatched across the world! Especially in modern times when fast fashion and 15 second social media rule virtually, I fall a bit more in love every single day with the timeless, ageless splendor of a skill that takes years and years to acquire and results in creating something so achingly beautiful, that it brings a lump in one’s throat.
The concept of amalgamating the two was the most natural progression .... the child-like love and awe of the legends merge seamlessly with years of detailed research and technical skill acquired over the years.
Magicsimsim comes from the ancient Talmudic expression “šem-šamáįm” meaning “In the name of Heaven” and coincidentally happens to be an alliteration of my name. It is also who I am, what I dream, where I’m from, who I love, whom I’ve lost, what I’ve seen, and what I, one day, might become.
