Our Story

Few years ago, sometime around 2008, during one of our countless sessions where we used to sit down with our dearest of the dear friends and talk about world politics, society and our contribution to it, we realized that “action speaks louder than words” indeed is true. And rather than simply debating on today’s burning issues, one has to take some action to bring in change. And we as fresh design graduates, wanted to bring in a positive change.

In late 2013, we started formulating a lifestyle brand that needed to be accessible, ethical and eco-friendly. And it also needed to be able to plug in a gap in the market place to stay relevant and be successful as a business model. We went through many new age novelty fabrics which are eco-friendly and had a lot of potential but they really missed on the emotional quotient. That is when we started questioning our “basics” about who we really are, our legacy in textiles, searching for a fabric that was truly humane in nature. We silently looked at each other and we knew the answer- HANDMADE FABRICS, our first love since we started learning textiles. A handspun, handwoven fabric that is so grounded and cardinal that it formed not only the foundation of modern fabrics but has an entire nation’s struggle for independence woven into it.

Hence, Cotton Rack was born, a grounded and socially responsible ethical lifestyle brand with simplicity at its core. A contemporary take, that satisfies our modern needs without losing the traditional essence. A brand that brings back the original glory that this handspun and handwoven fabric truly deserves by aspiring the young again. And all of this while bringing a change to lives of the maker, the wearer and the environment.

Frequently asked questions
How are you going to deliver the products and by when can I expect to recieve them?

The products that are readily available in our stock are shipped within two days of order and can take from 5-7 days to reach you, however, due to current Covid'19 restrictions the shipments might get delayed longer depending on the rules, regulations and condition in the recieving country.
Custom made orders and designs which need to be tailored are shipped within 3-7 business days.
For International shipping (outside India), we prefer EMS Speed Post service by Indian Postal Services.

Where do we get our products from?

Cotton Rack directly works with weavers and artisans for raw materials (fabrics, etc) and also sources the same co-operative societies, NGOs and Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and Khadi Village Industries Board (KVIB) warehouses across India. The garments are then manufactured in our own workshop or at the facilities that are inspected by us and known to be ethical. We guarantee the authenticity of each and every product we sell.

What do you mean by Handspun and Hand-woven?

Cotton Rack uses only Gandhi Charkha or Ambara Charkha (types of Hand spinning wheels) spun yarn that is spun by spinners in small villages across the country. The yarn is loosely spun which gives the final fabric softness and breathability. Once, the yarn is handspun, it is used to weave fabric on pitlooms and floor looms by weavers (mostly) of the same village or neighbouring ones.

Isn't your fabric Khadi then?

No. We cannot call our fabrics Khadi, since, we are not registered with KVIC and as of now we haven't licensed Khadi trademark as per the Indian government regulations. However, the constitution of our fabric is same and in certain cases the raw material is sourced from affiliated/certified Khadi institutions as discussed under an earlier question.

Is your clothing Organic?

No, Cotton Rack doesn't claim any fabric utilised currently to be organic unless specified in the product description. What we do ensure is that all the fabrics are made using natural raw materials and by hand with utmost love.

Are you sustainable?

Well, the answer to this totally depends on your definition of "Sustainable". Cotton Rack products are not conciously made to be sustainable. Being sustainable is the by-product of what we create. At the end of the day, we don't like talking about sustainability because it is now an abused term. We rather talk about #Responsibility that we all have to collectively realise and take while making choices in what we consume and in what quantities do we consume. Also, at our end, we aim to be zero-waste and utilise our resources wisely while lowering our dependency on chemicals and mechanical processes in the production.

Why did I receive a slightly different shade of colour than shown on the website?

There are always going to be slight difference in the colour/shade of the product on the display and in reality. This unfortunately, is a limitation of current technology available to human kind.
