Al crecer en el estado de Bengala lleno de arte y música de los años 90, me alimentaba de una dieta diaria de leyendas de fantasía y folclore mágico. Este mundo estaba lleno de los ricos matices de la imaginación mientras mi abuela me adormecía con cuentos medio olvidados de dioses antiguos y sus epopeyas. las palabras pintan una rica imaginería de energías cósmicas trascendentalmente hermosas, seres nobles y heroicos y el puro amor, belleza y generosidad de la naturaleza humana.
Comencé mi propia versión de volver a contar estas historias a través de garabatos a lápiz y dibujos de crayones en las páginas posteriores de los cuadernos ...... Jatayu alado tratando frenéticamente de rescatar a Sita capturada, Garuda ganando triunfalmente Amrit o el Néctar de los Dioses, los cisnes celestiales en la épica historia de amor de Nala Damayanti y muchos más. todo dibujado con el vigor (¡y la experiencia!) de un niño de 10 años. El amor por la mitología se hizo más fuerte con cada año que pasaba a medida que devoraba historias no solo de las antiguas epopeyas de la India, sino que también agregaba leyendas griegas, nórdicas, celtas y aztecas a mi biblioteca mental en constante expansión.
La vida universitaria en el ilustre Instituto Nacional de Tecnología de la Moda (Nueva Delhi, clase de 2003), despertó mi apetito por el folclore mientras documentaba artesanías olvidadas y rituales de narración de historias en algunos de los rincones culturalmente más ricos de la India ... incluyendo Nathdwara en Rajasthan, Kangra y Chamba Valley en Himachal, Sriperumbudur en Andhra Pradesh, por nombrar algunos. Y aquí es donde descubrí a otro gran amor de mi vida.... la fabulosa tradición del bordado a mano. ¡La pura complejidad y riqueza del bordado a mano indio se remonta a unos pocos miles de años y es inigualable en todo el mundo! Especialmente en los tiempos modernos, cuando la moda rápida y las redes sociales de 15 segundos gobiernan virtualmente, me enamoro un poco más cada día del esplendor atemporal y eterno de una habilidad que lleva años y años adquirir y resulta en crear algo tan dolorosamente hermoso, que trae un nudo en la garganta.
El concepto de amalgamar los dos fue la progresión más natural.... el amor infantil y el asombro de las leyendas se fusionan a la perfección con años de investigación detallada y habilidad técnica adquirida a lo largo de los años.
Magicsimsim proviene de la antigua expresión talmúdica "šem-šamáįm" que significa "En el nombre del Cielo" y casualmente resulta ser una aliteración de mi nombre. También es quién soy, lo que sueño, de dónde soy, a quién amo, a quién he perdido, qué he visto y en lo que, algún día, podría llegar a ser.
Growing up in the 90’s art and music filled state of Bengal, I was fed on a daily diet of fantasy legends and magical folklore. This world was filled with the rich hues of imagination as my grandmother would lull me to sleep with half forgotten tales of ancient Gods and their epics.... the words painting a rich imagery of transcendentally beautiful cosmic energies, noble and heroic beings and the sheer love, beauty, and generosity of human nature.
I started my own version of retelling these stories via pencil scribbles and crayon drawings on the back pages of notebooks ......winged Jatayu frantically trying to rescue captured Sita, Garuda triumphantly winning Amrit or the Nectar of Gods, the celestial swans in Nala Damayanti’s epic love story and many more.... all drawn with the single-minded vigor (and expertise!) of a 10-year-old. The love for mythology grew stronger with each passing year as I devoured stories from not only the ancient epics of India, but added Greek, Norse, Celtic, Aztec legends to my ever-expanding mental library.
College life in the illustrious National Institute of Fashion Technology (New Delhi, class of 2003), whetted my appetite for folklore as I documented forgotten crafts and story telling rituals in some of the culturally richest corners of India... including Nathdwara in Rajasthan, Kangra and Chamba Valley in Himachal, Sriperumbudur in Andhra Pradesh to name a few. And this is where I discovered another great love of my life.... the fabulous tradition of hand embroidery. The sheer intricacy and richness of Indian hand embroidery dates back a few thousand years and is unmatched across the world! Especially in modern times when fast fashion and 15 second social media rule virtually, I fall a bit more in love every single day with the timeless, ageless splendor of a skill that takes years and years to acquire and results in creating something so achingly beautiful, that it brings a lump in one’s throat.
The concept of amalgamating the two was the most natural progression .... the child-like love and awe of the legends merge seamlessly with years of detailed research and technical skill acquired over the years.
Magicsimsim comes from the ancient Talmudic expression “šem-šamáįm” meaning “In the name of Heaven” and coincidentally happens to be an alliteration of my name. It is also who I am, what I dream, where I’m from, who I love, whom I’ve lost, what I’ve seen, and what I, one day, might become.
