Old geometry, quietly made for today
Clavis & Compass nació de la fascinación por los márgenes de los libros antiguos: los círculos, las estrellas y los bordes con letras que llenan las páginas de los grimorios renacentistas, los tratados de alquimia y los cuadernos de los primeros geómetras. Esos sellos se crearon con tan solo un compás, una regla y paciencia. Fueron hechos para ser contemplados y transmitidos, no para ser pasados por alto con prisas.
Nuestro nombre proviene de esos dos instrumentos. Clavis significa llave en latín, aquello que abre. El compás dibuja el círculo, la primera y más antigua forma de orden. Entre ellos se encuentra todo lo que creamos.
Cada sello de la Serie I es un diseño original, dibujado en oro sobre negro y construido a partir de la geometría real, sin imágenes prediseñadas ni símbolos prestados. Alrededor de cada borde se lee un lema en latín, elegido por lo que pide a quien lo lee:
- I · Clavis: Quod clausum est aperietur. Lo que está cerrado se abrirá.
- II · Circinus: Omnia in mensura et numero. Todo en medida y número.
- III · Lux: Lux ex tenebris oritur. La luz surge de la oscuridad.
- IV · Silentium: In silentio sapientia. En silencio, sabiduría.
- V · Porta: Per portam ad astra. Through the gate to the stars.
Nuestra primera colección plasma estos sellos en velas de soja color ámbar con tapas negras, un estilo boticario que emite un suave resplandor al encenderse. Cada una se ofrece como un pequeño ritual de atención: un momento para encender una llama, leer el lema y decidir qué se desea comenzar, abrir o dejar.
Debemos aclarar dos cosas. Primero, nuestras velas se fabrican bajo pedido y nuestro socio de producción, Printify, se encarga de su vertido, impresión y envío a través de su red de fabricación de velas. Esto significa que no hay ningún almacén y que cada pedido se elabora especialmente para usted. Segundo, no pretendemos hacer magia. Un sello no cambiará su suerte. Lo que sí puede hacer es ofrecerle un objeto bello y cuidadosamente diseñado, y una razón para detenerse, y creemos que eso tiene un gran valor.

Clavis & Compass began with a fascination for the margins of old books: the circles, stars and lettered rims that fill the pages of Renaissance grimoires, alchemical treatises and the notebooks of early geometers. Those seals were made with nothing more than a compass, a straightedge and patience. They were built to be contemplated and handed down, not to be hurried past.
Our name comes from those two instruments. Clavis is Latin for key, the thing that opens. The compass draws the circle, the first and oldest shape of order. Between them sits everything we make.
Each seal in Series I is an original design, drawn in gold on black and built from true geometry, with no stock clip art and no borrowed symbols. Around every rim runs a Latin motto, chosen for what it asks of the person reading it:

- III · Lux: Lux ex tenebris oritur. Light rises out of darkness.

Our first collection sets these seals on amber soy candles with black lids, an apothecary look that glows softly once lit. Each one is offered as a small ritual of attention: a moment to light a flame, read the motto and decide what you mean to begin, open or set down.
We should be clear about two things. First, our candles are made to order and poured, printed and dispatched by our production partner, Printify, through their candle-making network. That means nothing sits in a warehouse and every order is made for you. Second, we make no claims to magic. A seal will not change your fortunes. What it can do is give you a beautiful, deliberate object and a reason to pause, and we think that is worth a great deal.
