"Non bisogna giudicare un libro dalla copertina."

Beh, secondo me è vero. Proprio come non si dovrebbe giudicare la bravura di uno scrittore in base al fatto che abbia o meno un agente letterario o che lavori per una delle cinque maggiori case editrici.

Mi chiamo Tiffany Terlop e sono una scrittrice e un'artista che ha passato tutta la vita cercando di dare un senso alla sua scrittura e alla sua arte, ma non ci è mai riuscita.

"Non era il tuo momento. Hai bisogno di più follower su Instagram. Pubblica con regolarità! Riscrivi il manoscritto finché quell'unico agente non sarà soddisfatto!" E così via, all'infinito.

Molte, moltissime cose mi hanno portato ad aprire questo negozio. Questa è una lunga storia a sé stante, ma sappiate solo che sono un outsider e faccio il tifo per gli outsider. Gli scrittori indipendenti? Sono gli outsider per eccellenza.

Gli autori indipendenti hanno vita dura. Lo so perché sono uno di loro. Devono scrivere da soli, trovare lettori beta, a volte pagarli, pagare gli editor, pagare l'impaginazione, pagare le copertine dei libri, pagare il merchandising, pagare questo, pagare quello, E devono anche avere un seguito sui social media, E devono fare tutto questo con una famiglia e un lavoro (nella maggior parte dei casi).

So quanto sia difficile per loro trovare i propri lettori e so che non tutti hanno un budget elevato (direi che quasi tutti noi abbiamo un budget praticamente nullo). Mi dispiace per gli scrittori indipendenti quando le loro copertine non sono delle migliori o le sinossi non sono eccezionali. Le persone giudicano i loro libri in base a questo e molti lo ignorano. Ma nel caso degli autori indipendenti, NON si può davvero giudicare un libro dalla copertina. Una brutta copertina o una sinossi approssimativa (perché scrivere un romanzo di 80.000 parole è MOLTO diverso dallo scrivere una sinossi di 100 parole, credetemi) non significa che non possano scrivere una storia fantastica.

Quindi, se siete qui nel mio negozio e avete letto fin qui, allora leggete assolutamente anche la prossima parte.

Questo negozio è per il lettore che vuole leggere libri che NON ha ancora trovato sugli scaffali di Barnes & Noble. È per il lettore che ama leggere, non per l'etichetta del New York Times o perché è di moda... ma semplicemente per chi ama leggere e scoprire storie nuove e straordinarie.

Tutti i libri in questo negozio sono di autori indipendenti con pochi o nessun seguito sui social media. Ho nascosto le copertine e le sinossi perché non voglio che il lettore li scarti basandosi solo su questo.

Personalmente ho selezionato tutti i libri presenti in questo negozio, ho parlato con gli autori e ho illustrato (senza alcun compenso per loro) il merchandising relativo ai loro libri.

Credo negli autori, negli artisti e nei creatori indipendenti. Faccio il tifo per chi parte svantaggiato.

E un cane di razza non si lascia abbattere!

PS: Tutti i libri indipendenti presenti in questo negozio sono stati acquistati da me con i miei soldi. In alcuni casi, gli autori sono stati così gentili da donarmi i loro libri.

Well, in my opinion, that's true. Just like you shouldn't judge how good a writer a person is by whether or not they have a literary agent, or whether or not they have a Big 5 publishing house.

My name is Tiffany Terlop and I'm a writer and an artist--who has spent her entire life trying to make something of her writing and art--and it just never ever happened.

"It wasn't your time. You need more fans on IG. Post consistently! Rewrite the manuscript until that one single agent is happy!" It goes on and on.

Many, many things have led me to opening this shop. That is a big 'ol story in itself, but just know that I'm an UNDERDOG and I ROOT for the underdogs out there. Indie writers? They're the ultimate underdogs.

Indie authors have it really tough. I know because I am one. They have to write all on their own, find beta readers, sometimes pay them, pay editors, pay for formatting, pay for book covers, pay for merch, pay for this, pay for that, AND they have to have a social media following, AND they have to do all this with a family and a job (in most cases).

I know how hard it is for them to find their readers and I know that they don't all have a big budget (I'd argue almost all of us have barely ANY budget). I feel for indie writers when they don't have the best book covers, or the most amazing book blurb. People judge their books based on that and many brush it aside. But in the case of indie authors, you really CANNOT judge a book by the cover. A bad cover or rough blurb (because writing a 80k word novel is VASTLY different than writing a 100-word book blurb, let me be the one to tell you) doesn't mean they can't write one hell of a good story.

So if you're here at my shop and you've read this far, then definitely read this next part.

This shop is for the reader who wants to read books that you HAVEN'T seen on the shelf at Barnes n Noble. This is for the reader that loves to read, not for the NYT label or because it's what's trending... they just love to read and discover new and amazing stories.

All of the books in this store are by indie authors with little to no social media following. I hid their book covers and their blurbs because I don't want the reader to brush it off based on that.

I personally have selected all of the books in this shop, had conversations with the authors, and have (at no charge to them) illustrated the merch for their books.

I believe in indie authors, artists, and creators. I root for the underdog.

And you can't keep a good dog down!
