Announcement    Atelier "La Bauta" is one of the few real handmade masks workshops still left in Venice.
Here we produce everyday paper-mache masks following the traditional way used by "mascareri" (masks producer) back in XII century.
All our creations are handmade and hand decorated, rendering our masks special and unique, they can be worn on special occasions or hang on the wall as a beautiful decoration for the house.
In over 20 years, we have created more than 220 sculptures, and nowadays we offer a complete selection of over 500 stiles. Our offer ranges from traditional masks, to "commedia dell'arte" and more modern masks.
To create a mask we start mixing humid paper stripes with flour and water; we follow placing the layers into a mould made out of chalk and when the mask is dry, we patiently polish the base with sand paper, to create a smooth surface ready to be decorated. After this, it is time to decorate the masks. All our masks are decorated using old techniques and traditional materials, like stucco, gold and silver leaf, acrylics, decoupage and blend with bitumen to make the mask look antique, decorations made using macramé (a kind of lace) pearls, trimmings and real feathers.
Following this steps we have our creations, each one different from the other.
All our pieces are unique, made out of real artisans work, developed from love and passion for what we do, for our masks and carnival and most of all for the beautiful city of Venice.
Just in case you cannot find the right masks for you, we are here to listen to your requests and suggestions and together we can develop your dream masks on request.

Located in the historic center of Venice, atelier La Bauta creates and manufactures Venetian masks in papier-mâché and historical costumes of all eras

Atelier "La Bauta" was born more than 20 years ago when two boyfriends (Armando and Arnisa) students of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, decided to make Venetian masks in papier-mâché to pay for their studies.
In the beginning we sold the masks made to the shops. One day we decided to open a shop of our own where we could sell all our production of masks.
Opening a shop in Venice where rents are very high and all the management is very difficult due to the lack of cars was not easy. Everything is done with boats.
But to our surprise things went well and we did a job that we both loved so we decided to give up our studies (with the disapproval of the parents) and devote ourselves full time to this great passion.
After a few years and after studies on the historical customs of various eras, we began to make historical costumes. Today we have more than 450 costumes from all ages. For this we have our chosen seamstress after a careful selection.
Today we have three shops in Venice, one of historical costumes, historical shoes and accessories and 2 of original Venetian masks in papier-mâché.
We are a point of reference for Venetians and many tourists who come to visit us every year.
