Over Mikan General Store
Jaren geleden stuitte ik in een kantoorboekhandel op een liniaal - hij was gemaakt van aluminium en had een prachtig afgeschuind ontwerp, waardoor je de rand gemakkelijk van het papier kunt tillen en vlekken kunt voorkomen bij het tekenen van lijnen. Het concept is zo krachtig dat het een levensveranderend aha-moment voor me betekende, als jonge ik. Geweldig design is als een liefdesbrief van de ontwerper. Toen kwam het idee om de grootsheid van briefpapier te verspreiden in me op.
Ik besloot het te kopen, ook al is het voor mij als student wel wat prijzig. Ik gebruik het echter tot nu toe bijna elke dag.
Japanse stationery heeft een sterke invloed op me gehad, al is het sinds mijn verhuizing naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk moeilijker geworden om ze te zien. Fysiek ben ik ver weg van plekken waar deze ontwerpen in overvloed verkrijgbaar zijn, maar de emotionele band ermee vervaagt nooit. De kleurrijke patronen, leuke en doordachte ideeën op washi-tapes, stempels, pennen en stickers hebben me op vele reizen geholpen. De constante moed en toewijding om de stationery-scene te vernieuwen en te innoveren. Ik hoop deze kans te grijpen om meer met jullie vrienden over de hele wereld te delen en samen inspiratie op te doen.

Years ago I was stumbling upon in a stationary shop looking at a ruler - it was made of aluminium and comes with a beautifully bevelled design feature that allows you to lift the edge off the paper easily, also avoiding smudge when drawing lines. The concept is so powerful and it came like a life-changing Ah-ha moment for me, as my young self. Great design is like a love letter from the designer. It was when the idea of spreading the greatness of stationery popped up in my mind.
I decided to buy it although it was a little bit expensive for me as a student, I use it almost every day until now.
Japanese stationery has a strong influence on me, albeit since moving to the UK seeing them becomes harder. Physically I'm far away from places where these designs are abundantly available, yet the emotional connections with them never fade. The colourful patterns, fun & thoughtful ideas on washi tapes, stamps, pens, stickers have been with me going through a lot of journeys. The constant courage and dedication to reimagine and innovate in the stationery scene. I hope to take this chance to share more with you all friends around the world and get inspired together.
