Anche se posso sicuramente simpatizzare con coloro che trovano i test standardizzati fastidiosi nella migliore delle ipotesi o profondamente problematici nella peggiore, personalmente mi sono sempre piaciuti. Parte del motivo è che li ho sempre considerati in parte come un puzzle logico. Se riesco a trovare strategie per affrontare le domande e tecniche per mantenermi incoraggiato durante i test, posso dare il massimo.

Ho lavorato duro per ottenere un punteggio SAT elevato come studente delle scuole superiori. Il mio obiettivo era un 1500, anche se il mio obiettivo segreto era un 1550. Alla fine ho ottenuto un 1590 e questo ha cambiato la traiettoria della mia vita.

Non solo sono stato ammesso all'Università di Washington con non una ma due borse di studio a tempo pieno, ma ho anche usato i miei punteggi dei test per ottenere un lavoro presso un'importante società di preparazione ai test durante il mio primo anno. E non ho mai guardato indietro. Successivamente, i miei punteggi GRE e la mia esperienza di insegnamento mi hanno permesso di ottenere finanziamenti completi sia per il mio master che per il mio dottorato.

Non ho mai utilizzato i punteggi LSAT che ho accumulato (170 e 177). Forse un giorno sarò ispirato a frequentare la facoltà di giurisprudenza, ma per ora ho scelto la preparazione agli esami piuttosto che una carriera da avvocato.

È vero che i punteggi dei test sono solo una parte di una domanda e generalmente non la parte più importante. Tuttavia, è anche vero che aumentare i tuoi punteggi può sbloccare opportunità che altrimenti non sarebbero disponibili. Ho lavorato con studenti atleti alla ricerca di un punteggio per garantire l'idoneità al reclutamento, veterani militari alla ricerca di un punteggio che consenta loro di utilizzare la GI Bill e studenti di tutte le età che desiderano rendere la loro domanda molto più forte e, si spera, qualificarsi per borse di studio .

Although I can definitely sympathize with those who find standardized tests annoying at best or deeply problematic at worst, I’ve personally always enjoyed them. Part of the reason is that I’ve always thought of them partially as a logic puzzle. If I can figure out strategies to approach the questions and techniques to keep myself encouraged while testing, I can perform my best.

Not only did I get admitted to the University of Washington with not one but two full-ride scholarships, but I also used my test scores to get a job at a prominent test prep company my junior year. And I’ve never looked back. Later, my GRE scores and teaching experience got me full funding for both my MA and my PhD.

I never ended up using the LSAT scores I’ve accumulated (170 and 177). Maybe someday I’ll be inspired to go to law school, but for now I’ve chosen test prep over a career as a lawyer.

It’s true that test scores are only part of an application, and generally not the largest part. However, it’s also true that raising your scores can unlock opportunities that otherwise wouldn’t be available. I’ve worked with student athletes looking for a score to provide recruiting eligibility, military veterans looking for a score that will allow them to use the GI Bill, and students of all ages looking to make their application that much stronger and hopefully qualify for scholarships.
