Leveling the Special Education Playing Field for Parents
For over 10 years, I've been advocating on behalf of children who learn differently. As the parent of a neurodiverse child, I vividly recall what it felt like to be new to special education with absolutely no idea of what to expect or where to turn when things started to go wrong.
After years of feeling stressed and worried that my son was losing valuable time he would never get back, I decided to take a more proactive approach by leveling up my special education knowledge and advocacy skills. In 2016, I successfully represented myself in an administrative due process proceeding that resulted in my son being awarded 2,820 compensatory education hours that are still being used to supplement his educational program.
As a former Registered Nurse, serving others is deeply rooted in my core values. At the IEP table, I bring a desire to improve every child’s quality of life. I'm committed to finding effective solutions that meet each child’s unique needs. My experience has taught me the importance of being data-driven and detail-oriented, two skills that are definitely needed to ensure that every child receives a free appropriate public education that prepares them for further education, employment, and independent living.
