In 1891, Werner invented the flame melting method and used it to produce lab made gemstones. After his success, he experimented with pure alumina. In a high-temperature muffle furnace, using an inverted hydrogen-oxygen blowpipe, he observed fine powder of pure alumina containing a small amount of chromium oxide slowly falling into the flame, melting, and dripping onto a base to solidify. After ten years of effort, Werner officially produced lab made rubies in 1904. The flame melting method was subsequently refined, producing rubies that were identical to natural rubies not only in appearance but also in their physicochemical and optical properties, yet cost only 1/20th the price of natural rubies, with purity, color, and transparency even surpassing those of natural rubies. This method remains in use today and is still the primary method for producing lab made gemstones worldwide, known as the "Werner method." Currently, almost all other natural rubies on the market are also made using this method. Rubies made using this method can all be called natural because they are exactly the same as natural ones.
