When I was in kindergarten, my teacher asked the class to draw a picture of her mouse. I won a prize for the best drawing, and my mom framed it and hung it in my room. I remember looking at it every night and thinking, “Wow, I did that.” I was hooked.
I went to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., and cut my creative teeth at Disney where I did all sorts of things but mainly designed children's products. I worked there happily for 12 years, but I always wanted to break out and create my own line of diverse, original artwork.
Why plates? Well, I don’t know about at your house, but at mine, which plate we are going to eat off of is a discussion my kids like to have AT EVERY MEAL. I’ve found that with your own face and your own name on your own plate, it’s no longer an issue. Plus, dishable designs is a keepsake that is actually useful! It’s also my small way of helping to make kids feel special, and any day I can do that is a great day. I adore designing, and I fine-tune each piece until I finally look at it and think, “Wow, I did that.”
