Fashion Designer turned Pattern Designer
He cosido desde niña: desde vestidos hasta colchas y ropa interior masculina. Siempre supe que quería ser diseñadora de moda y empecé confeccionando ropa femenina de alta gama en Chicago.
Después de varios años de esforzarme (y luchar) para entrar en la industria, un día me hice ropa interior solo por diversión. Al publicar fotos en algunos grupos de internet, ¡algunos me preguntaron dónde comprarla! Supe que había dado con algo genial por todos los comentarios que recibí. Poco después abrí Carl Wesley Menswear, una línea de ropa interior masculina de lujo. Al principio, yo mismo cortaba y cosía todo, y con el tiempo me mudé a South Bend, donde alquilé un pequeño taller de producción.
Mi negocio creció rapidísimo, sobre todo al principio de los confinamientos por la COVID-19. En 2022, mi negocio había crecido tanto que dedicaba todo mi tiempo a dirigirlo, a ocuparme del marketing, el inventario, los envíos y las tareas administrativas; apenas dedicaba tiempo a crear, diseñar y fabricar, que era mi pasión. Tomé la difícil decisión de cerrar el negocio porque estaba agotado.
Desde el cierre de Carl Wesley Menswear, comencé una nueva e inesperada carrera como soldador, lo que me ha dado una base sólida para seguir siendo creativo en mi tiempo libre. Fundé Carl Wesley Sewing Patterns como un trabajo creativo paralelo que me permite centrarme en mi verdadera pasión: el diseño y la costura.
I've been sewing since I was a kid - everything from dresses to quilts to men's underwear. I always knew I wanted to be a fashion designer and I started out making high-end womenswear in Chicago.
After hustling (and struggling) to break into the industry for a few years, one day I made myself some underwear just for fun. When I posted pictures in some online groups I had guys asking me where to buy them! I knew I had stumbled on to something great with all the feedback I received. Soon after I opened Carl Wesley Menswear, a luxury men's underwear line. At first I did all the cutting and sewing myself and eventually moved to South Bend where I hired a small production shop.
My business grew really fast, especially during the beginning of the Covid lockdowns. Fast forward to 2022 and my business had grown so much that I spent all my time running the business doing marketing, inventory, shipping, and administrative tasks - I hardly spent any time creating, designing, and making which was my first love. I made the tough decision to close the business because I was burned out.
In the time since Carl Wesley Menswear closed, I started a new and unexpected career as a welder which has given me stable footing to continue being creative in my spare time. I started Carl Wesley Sewing Patterns as a creative side-gig that allows me to focus on my true love of designing and sewing.
