Fabric, sewing kits and haberdashery for anyone who'd rather spend time crafting.
Marcel & June came about because we wanted to make it easier for people to explore new crafts.
We're Chloé and Alex, two designers based in Edinburgh. Whether it's sewing, painting, sculpting, photography, or the occasional craft rabbit hole that starts at 11pm on a Tuesday, we've got a fairly obsessive relationship with making things.
The name Marcel & June comes from two things we care about. Marcel is a nod to Proust and his stories of childhood memory and nostalgia and it represents the French half of our heritage (hence the accent on Chloé’s e). June is the feeling we want our brand to have: warm, bright, a bit like the first properly sunny day of the year.
How it started
Chloé learned to sew as a kid, taught by her mamie (grandma, in French) alongside her siblings. That kind of hands-on, learn-by-doing approach stuck with her ever since. She spent her teens working through pretty much every craft going: polymer clay, origami, macramé, friendship bracelets and more. The list is long and the results have been mixed, but that's part of the fun.
Alex came at it from a different angle. As a kid he’d spend his time drawing and doing paper craft. Later in life he pursued a career as an illustrator before finally moving into design. He's never really been able to stick to a single creative pursuit, which we've decided is a feature more than a bug.
After a few years of proper grown-up jobs, we both found ourselves wanting to make again. Chloé got back into sewing, Alex picked up his camera, and eventually we thought: what if we actually did something with all of this?
What Marcel & June is about
We only sell things we've used ourselves and genuinely love, and nothing is chosen just to fill space. We're particularly drawn to the kind of crafts that feel timeless; the ones your nan might have done, that are now having a very well-deserved moment. Sewing, embroidery, hand-stitching: all skills worth learning properly, with materials worth investing in.
Whether you're a complete beginner or someone who already has a dedicated craft corner (no judgement, same), we hope you find something here that inspires you to make something you're proud of!
