Wij zijn een textielstudio en stoffenhuis gevestigd in India, gebouwd op de overtuiging dat stof met dezelfde ernst moet worden beschouwd als het kledingstuk of object dat er uiteindelijk van gemaakt zal worden. We kijken verder dan kleur en vezelsamenstelling naar de eigenschappen van het garen, de weefstructuur, het gewicht, de valling, het oppervlak en hoe een stof reageert wanneer deze wordt geknipt, gewassen en gedragen.
Onze collectie wordt niet bepaald door één enkele productiemethode. Ze combineert handgeweven textiel, machinaal geweven stoffen in kleine oplages en specialistische stoffen die geproduceerd worden met machines die geselecteerd zijn op basis van de vereiste eigenschappen. Een compacte denim, een luchtige gaasstof, een gestructureerde visgraatstof, een getextureerde dobby en een soepele zijde vragen elk iets anders van hun makers.
Wij geloven niet dat 'handgemaakt' automatisch beter betekent. Wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat de mooiste stoffen ontstaan door de juiste materialen, kennis en methoden af te stemmen op het beoogde doel.
ZAN is ontstaan door nauwe samenwerking met wevers en vrouwelijke ambachtslieden, en die relaties hebben onze kijk op textiel fundamenteel gevormd. Een maker is nooit slechts de laatste persoon die een ontwerp uitvoert. Hun observaties van hoe een garen zich gedraagt, waar een structuur mogelijk moet worden aangepast, of welke afwerking ervoor zorgt dat de stof goed valt, bepalen vaak wat de stof uiteindelijk wordt.
Tegelijkertijd zorgt de technische kennis van ervaren weverijen ervoor dat andere stoffen de consistentie, breedte, dichtheid of prestaties bereiken die hun constructie vereist. Wij waarderen beide vormen van expertise. Wat voor ons telt, is niet of een stof van een handweefgetouw of een bepaalde machine komt, maar of deze met zorg en vakmanschap is gemaakt.
Sommige van onze stoffen vinden we na lang zoeken; andere ontwikkelen we door opnieuw te kijken naar garendiktes, weefstructuren, gewichten, kleuren of afwerkingen. In beide gevallen voelen we ons aangetrokken tot natuurlijke vezels, bijzondere texturen en stoffen met een uitgesproken materiaalidentiteit, van katoen, linnen en hennep tot zijde, wol, bananenvezel en zorgvuldig samengestelde mengsels.
Onze stoffen zijn geselecteerd voor mensen die het verschil zien: ontwerpers, kleermakers, kunstenaars, ateliers en nieuwsgierige makers die zich laten leiden door het materiaal zelf bij het creëren.
ZAN is een doorlopend onderzoek naar wat textiel kan zijn: precies of onregelmatig, ingetogen of expressief, traditioneel of compleet nieuw.

We are a textile studio and fabric house based in India, built around the belief that cloth should be considered with the same seriousness as the garment or object it will eventually become. We look beyond colour and fibre content to the character of the yarn, the construction of the weave, the weight, drape, surface and the way a fabric responds when it is cut, washed and worn.
Our collection is not defined by a single production method. It brings together handwoven textiles, small-batch mill-woven cloth and specialist fabrics produced using machinery chosen for the qualities they require. A compact denim, an airy gauze, a structured herringbone, a textured dobby and a fluid silk each ask something different of their makers.
We do not believe that “handmade” automatically means better. We believe the finest fabric comes from matching the right material, knowledge and method to its intended purpose.
ZAN began through close work with weavers and women artisans, and those relationships fundamentally shaped the way we understand textiles. A maker is never merely the final pair of hands carrying out a design. Their observations of how a yarn behaves, where a structure may need adjusting, or which finish will allow the cloth to settle properly often determine what the fabric ultimately becomes.
At the same time, the technical knowledge of skilled mills allows other fabrics to achieve the consistency, width, density, or performance their construction demands. We value both forms of expertise. What matters to us is not whether a fabric comes from a handloom or a particular machine, but whether it has been made thoughtfully and made well.
Some of our fabrics are discovered through long searches; others are developed by reconsidering yarn counts, weave structures, weights, colours or finishes. Across both, we are drawn to natural fibres, uncommon textures and cloth with a distinct material identity, from cotton, linen and hemp to silk, wool, banana fibre and carefully considered blends.
Our fabrics are chosen for people who notice the difference: designers, dressmakers, artists, studios and curious makers who allow the material itself to influence what they create.
ZAN is an ongoing study of what cloth can be; precise or irregular, quiet or expressive, traditional or entirely new.
