Created from yardage cut randomly into snippets and strips, colors and textures collide like dropped pick-up sticks, falling asymmetrically and randomly. This freefall is encased by seven border fabrics. This stunning one-of-a-kind art quilt appears in LUCK: A COLLECTION OF FACTS, FICTION, INCANTATION & VERSE (Lorimer Press, 2010). With a sleeve for hanging attached, this unique piece measures 70 x 95. An original design, this quilt cannot be replicated.

This quilt, Pick-Up Sticks, was also featured in Samplers and Symmetry III: "Pieces by Area African American Quilters," February 1-March 26, 2011 at the Winston-Salem Delta Fine Arts Center.

I choose fabrics from designers like Hoffman, Kaffe Fassett, Timeless Treasures, SSI, Heide Stoll-Weber, Michael Miller, Robert Kaufman, and incorporate top quality varietals: hand painted fabrics, hand dyes, screen prints, batiks, calicoes, tie dyes, solids—mostly 100% cotton—plus brocades, sateens and sparklers. Fabrics are collected from the U.S.A., the Caribbean, Indonesia, and Africa—particularly Ghana.

I hand quilt (7-10 spi) the quilt face to the batting and the back fabric selected specifically for each quilt.

Each is a one-of-a-kind creation that vary by a) the choices of textures and patterns in fabrics employed, b) the placement of the fabrics in juxtaposition, c) the color combinations and shadings, and d) the style and colors of the border fabrics.
