Beautifully painted young sweethearts and a birdcage of love birds tell of the romance in this wonderful Italian made enamel compact. The image is encircled with enameling of bright turquoise and deep lapis lazuli blue.

The border of the lid, the sides and the reverse of the case : All have detailed chased silver design. The interior is gold washed in excellent original condition. The original hinge is in excellent working order and it snaps securely closed. The mirror is beveled adn appears to be stitched in. This compact has the original powder screen and there is still some powder residue remaining.

Alfredo Fallaci ws the first to make silver enamel compacts through his jewelry business in Florence, Italy, 1939. With the demise of luxury items due to scarcity of precious metals throughout WWII, Alfredo closed his fledgling business and opened a bar in Rome's Termini train station for the duration of the war. He and his family resumed the jewelry business in 1946. Then Alfredo, his wife, Ottavina and his son Pietro, who runs the jewelry business today, began making compacts in 800 silver, gilded silver and gilded brass. The compacts were sold in the family's shop and were distributed to other Italian tourist centers. Most of them were exported to France and the United States in high-end department stores such as Macy's, Gimbel's, Saks and Neiman Marcus
