Antique Art Deco Industrial Telephone Switchline. Circa 1930's

This phone was used in large industrial sites - such as train stations, electrical utilities, etc. This was the phone with which you called the switchboard operator. The handle on the side was cranked to generate the electricity that would take the caller's voice across the wires to the central plant operator.

The only other one exactly like this that I have seen was from a railroad station.

I am told that all the wires are in perfect condition and that if one had a second phone like this, that the two could be wired together and would work, so that you could call back and forth from one room of the house to another. Similar to an intercom.

The phone is attached to a black base board which is screwed onto the plywood board. It can be removed from the plywood to hang on the wall. I have chosen to keep it on the base so as not to harm it.

Metal/steel construction. Rust on the nails and random spots on the body of the phone, but overall in good vintage condition.

The composite picture shows a closeup of the handle and hook, the label and the inner workings of the phone.

I love this piece because of the art deco design on the phone and the ambiance. Perfect for game room or a train room decor.

And if you plan to get another and try to make it work - the perfect father/son project for the engineering minded.
