All About the Stars, published in 1954, is a textbook classic from the days spent in the science classroom sitting around those smooth black tables and watching film strips.

The simple cover design was protected, pretty much, by a boring, old book jacket. What a stargazer needs, though, is stars so I added a few of my own by sprinkling a mysterious constellation on the cover.

Luckily, this guide was so well preserved, I was able to keep the original inside covers intact and use the flyleaves to decorate a few added library pockets.

I replaced the original text block with three sturdy signatures of sketchbook and blue-line graph papers. Each signature is wrapped in a heavy decorative paper but is lightened up by the addition to each section of real pages from the original spacy textbook. The beautiful, and now retro, illustrations done in aqua, black, and white have a simple charm that's refreshing when compared to the eye-frying computer graphics of today.

There's room in the spine to add some photos of your own stargazing adventures to the pages. Astronomy buffs can use it to collect articles about all the crazy phenomena happening in the skies these days.

Notice the spine edge where I crossed over a Longstitch pattern to add interest in the matching maroon telescope details.

This recycled classroom treasure measures 9 1/4" tall x 7" wide x 1" deep and the 30-40 pages (depending on how you count them!) lay open flat so you can take this book along and write and draw anywhere.

Make this an awesome Retro Father's Day gift for your Baby-Boomer dad!

Or hurry! Your favorite Science teacher would love this as an end-of-year gift!
