This is a rare, in very good condition, First Edition of the charming biography "The Little Princesses" by Marion Crawford in which she recounts the seventeen years she was employed by the British Royal family as the governess to then Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret.
'Crawfie', as she was affectionately dubbed by 'Princess Lilibet', offers a first-hand account of daily life during her tenure as the girls’ formal and informal educator, starting in the early 1930's when Elizabeth was 5 years old (and Margaret was two) until 1948 when Prince Charles was born.
This book is full of wonderful stories about fascinating people. It was the first story ever told of the world behind the palace walls... an informal, yet intimate, portrait of everyday life in a happy, private family relayed with understanding and humor.
Of particular note in today's world in which the often intimate details of the lives of the multitudes are openly shared with the universe via social media outlets and tell-all books, media frenzies, and paparazzi invasiveness are all too commonplace, it may be quite surprising to know, especially after reading the innocuous anecdotes, that Marion Crawford was shunned by the royal family after her story was published, and, sadly, there was never again contact between them. How unfortunate. (Not sure about the validity of this, but I also read while researching this book that the Queen Mother was even said to have given permission to Crawford to write this account of her personal experiences.)
+ 16 full pages of gravure illustrations,
+ More than 40 photographic images,
+ A two-page photo montage on the front and back inside covers include images of handwritten thank you notes by the princesses.
"To the people of America with the fervent hope that our nations may come ever closer together in mutual understanding and sympathy."
Very good overall condition...
+ The red boards are in excellent condition with no marks or fading. (Any discoloration you may see in the photos is a result of my camera, not a fault with the book.)
+ The binding is tight and in excellent condition.
+ As expected with a book more than 60 years old, the pages are light tanned with slightly darker tanning on the three outer edges. There is a random light pencil mark in the margin of one page and a light smudge (finger print?) in the margin on another page.
+ A small, white label (Betts Bookstore. Bangor & Orono Maine) near the bottom left of the front end paper blends in with the black and white photo montage.
+ The dust jacket is intact with several small tears and some creases. Please see the photos for the best description. I have several more photos if you'd like to see them.
