While traveling in Northern AZ this spring we were delighted to come upon a thick grove of Manzanita in the National Forest. We first saw these trees while traveling in Oregon one year. The bark has a smooth, red appearance and we wanted to see what kind of boxes they would make. The trees were more the size of bushes here in AZ and we had to search to find one large enough that was also dead, but we found a couple pieces to try. We left the natural crack as you can see and didn't sand any of that part. We used a filler in the smaller cracks to stabilize the wood and enhance the naturalness of the piece. The opening has been machined out to leave the box one piece and an additional piece glued to the lid to provide a custom fit.
No stains were used , the color is the natural grain brought out with the beeswax finish hand applied. Our 2woodhunters logo and the date made are woodburned into the bottom of the box.

Dimensions: 4 x 3 3/8 x 1 3/4 inch tall
Opening: peanut shaped opening is 3 x 3/8 x 2 x 1 inch deep

The first 4 pictures are of different views of the box. The last picture is of a live Manzanita we found in AZ.
