Mid Century Modern Bitossi Era Metropolitan Museum Ceramic Hippo - Italian Modern Animal Figurine

This lovely little ceramic hippo, hand formed in Italy for the Metropolitan Museum in the mid 60's, has an incredible sense of Mid Century style. With oversized features and a gorgeous blue glaze, this figurine makes quite the statement. From its abstract facial features to the Modernist, hand-drawn accents, this unique hippo radiates personality. Very similar in make and design to Bitossi creations, as well as Mid Century Scandinavian ceramic artists Lisa Larson and Stig Lindberg, this piece would fit in wonderfully with your Modern sculptural ceramics collection. Extract from the museum's web site ..."'William' is a bright blue hippopotamus just under 8 inches high located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Egyptian galleries. He is made of faience, a ceramic material that is fired at a high temperature, and is decorated with lotus blossoms, which represent the hippo's creative forces in nature. An Englishman, Captain H. M. Raleigh, and his family owned a picture of the hippopotamus, which they named William. In 1931 the captain wrote an article for the magazine Punch about his picture of William. The name caught on, and since that time the little blue hippo has been known as William to almost everyone." Willaim is in great condition, with general crazing and a glaze rub/manufacturer's flaw visible on his front side (image 1). Signed on the bottom "Italy Metropolitan Museum," this hippo would make a fantastic addition to any Mid Century ceramic or figurine collection. With its very personal sense of style, this figure is perfect for any appreciators of single-minded Mid Century Modern design.
