This vintage Vantines, New York, box probably held incense or powder. The original company label is still on the bottom of the box. Vantines began importing Chinese and Japanese goods in the 19th century. This looks like it is from the 1920s or possibly earlier. The box is an unusual hexagon shape, with strands of colored straw in red, green, and orange lining edges and sides of the lid.

The hexagon shape black/white image on the lid appears to be a hand painted or hand stamped (with hand painted touches) watercolor, classically Japanese. The box is 3-¼“ across at the widest (point to point) and 1-5/8“ high.

Two sides of the lid are split up the fold. It looks as if a previous owner adding tape on one of these (inside the lid) but the tape is split. It is missing about ½“ or less of straw framing the image. The image has one small brown speck on it. The colorful straw on the sides is faded. The inside of the box has some light spots and one dark brown spot. The underside is dingy and the label has some tiny scuffs. The box is still lovely and displays well!
