The work: A History of the Birds of Europe, not observed in the British Isles, by Bree Charles Robert. Groombridge and Sons, London: 1859-63. The plates were executed by Benjamin Fawcett, whose early chromolithographs (color-printed wood-engravings) are actually finished by hand, some almost entirely hand-colored (though the plates of eggs are sometimes printed, but almost always finished by hand). Benjamin Fawcett was arguably the most accomplished of nineteenth century woodblock color printers. Fawcett's later works in the 1870s and 80s are almost entirely color-printed, so Bree's Birds represents one of his earlier experimentations with color printing. Originally issued in 59 parts.

The desirability of this work and its survival in such pristine condition is due to the superb skills and techniques of Fawcett, which are now largely lost. He selected, ground and mixed his inks with the utmost care. Only heavy paper stock of the finest quality was used, often imported from France. This paper has seen little deterioration with almost no foxing and it retains its fine ivory color and sheen. The plates were color printed in up to four colors, with additional hand coloring.
