RESERVED for TELYNOR54 Tibetan "pu-yok" style supported spindle, light weight in Sheoak and Queensland Ironwood - custom made

This listing is for a spindle made to order to the pattern and approximate weight and size shown here. The exact size and wood grain will vary a little but your spindle will resemble the illustrated one closely. If required by the chosen wood the whorl may have the balance tuned by insertion of a small brass pin on the underside of the whorl.

This lovely Tibetan style supported spindle design will be a delight for the spinner who loves a supported spindle. It is light weight (around 1 oz to 1.25 oz ) and 11. to 11.5 in in long.

The design is based on a shape still used by Tibetan nomads known as a pu-yok. It is long and slender with a largish whorl about a quarter the way up the shaft, which has a taper all the way from the whorl to the spinning tip.

The shaft of this heirloom quality item is made in Queenlalnd Ironwood, an Australian native timber that is light brown in colour and strong. It takes a smooth silky polish and is very straight grained. There is a slight notch in the shaft above the whorl to assist tying on. The whorl is turned from a select piece of Sheoak from Western Australia, with prominent patterning showing on the whorl. The whorl is dished in the centre on the upper side giving this design a little extra rim weighting and a very long, medium speed spin characteristic.

The top point is a slender taper to a narrow point to allow the yarn to slip the tip easily. The bottom point is well defined and designed for an effortless long spin. A support bowl is needed for using this type of spindle. I also offer wooden support bowls on this website and can make to order if there are none in stock.

The spindle is polished with a high shine French polish and a final gloss of carnauba wax adds durability.

This spindle style has a remarkably long spin and excellent balance. The spindle operates at a medium speed and is easy to flick. It has a very long sustain on the spin.

Dimensions - whorl diameter approx 75 mm, (3 in), spindle length overall 280 to 295 mm, (11 to to 11.5 in), length of spindle above whorl about 230 mm (9.2 in approx) weight 28 to 34 grams (1 to 1.2 oz approx). All my spindles are tested before despatch.
