Illustration of a tropical shrub or tree from the Island of Timor in South East Asia. The artist identified this plant as Tallis.

This listing is for a facsimile of an illustration from a manuscript about the flora of Timor. The originals were drawn by a Portuguese priest in the 18th. century and are held in an arquive in Lisbon. They are watercolor illustrations on rice paper.

This facsimilar edition was produced by the arquive in 1969 and I understand that it is the only exitsting reproduction of these drawings.

The authors of the 1969 edition have been unable to identify this particular plant.

You receive a vintage facsimile of the original illustration and the handwritten description of the plant (in Portuguese, see thumbnail 5) that accompanied the watercolor.

A facsimile is a copy or reproduction of an old book or manuscript that is as true to the original source as possible. As you can see in the scanned images, the page shows the illustration as it is in the original. Some of them have uneven borders or other minor imperfections. In my opinion, this makes the vintage illustration even more beautiful, you get an exact reproduction of an 18th. century drawing.

Size: approx. 10" by 13.5"

In excellent condition.

This is the actual page from a 1969 book, not a reproducition.

Sent to you in a tube protected with a cello sleeve.
