Portmeirion Pottery Stoke-on-Trent
Susan Williams~Ellis

Susan Williams~Ellis (1918-2007) is an icon of the 1960s. Her bold new ideas on form and color went on to help shape 60s art & culture. She and her husband founded Portmeirion Pottery & Williams~Ellis was the chief designer & remained so until her death in her sleep at the age of 89.

This pattern, Magic City, was designed in 1966 to recall the town in South Wales which her father had helped design. Despite having its roots in England, the design is almost Nordic (when I first saw it I thought it was Swedish). The graphic pattern depicts ornate, organic buildings in a highly stylized mode. The colors are deep & vivid...dark teal, rust, grey, olive and black & white. The narrow angular cups sit on satin black saucers. Together these pieces are very graphic & altogether striking. Very ground-breaking back in the 60s :)

This 8 piece set (4 cups/4 saucers) is in good condition. The cups measure 3.25" tall and 3" across the top of the bowl. The saucers are 5" across & .75" tall. The cups' colors are rich & true ~ no scratches or stains ~ the insides bright & clean. The pieces do show various signs of age. 3 of the 4 cups show the heavy crazing typical of this china (pic 4 ~ cup on left), & while the 4th cup has little crazing, it does have a small flaw near it's lip ~ 2 tiny chips close to each other (see pic 4 ~ cup on right). This cup also has a different backstamp...possibly a replacement cup? The saucers have no chips, cracks or crazing but do show 3 white spots on the back of each for the kiln props & also show some slight scuff marks on the face where the cup sits. But these marks are consistent thru all the pieces and the set as a whole is very dramatic & very cool :)

These cups & saucers have lived a life, but they have done it gracefully & remain beautiful, iconic pieces of 1960s tableware.
