Autumn Colors in a woman's felted hat -

As I put the finishing touches on this felted beret, realized that it had a touch of Kate Middleton to it – it's rather like that brown hat she wore on St Patrick’s Day.

This handcrafted beret is a milk chocolate, toffee brown color, a delicious shade of soft Merino wool from my British supplier. The hat has nuno felt inlays of upcycled, shiny ,copper silk and bronze fabrics layered in on one side, which sets off the elegant simplicity of the unadorned side. It is the kind of hat that goes with anything! A classic that is also, one of a kind, Wearable Art!

The beret has an asymmetrical shape, with a crest-pleat shape felted in. I’ve added a few tiny stitches to help hold it and felt has the amazing property of 'remembering.' The head size edge has been rolled and hand sewn for a neat finish.

Two tiny wig combs have been hand sewn in, on either side, above the ear area -- just to make sure your hat won't blow away in a strong wind! One shouldn't have to hold on to one's hat in the wind!

The hat should fit a range of 22-22 ¾ inches (55.88– 57.78 cm).
It measures 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter across the top.

Sheep wool resists dirt and rain excellently!
This hat can be gently hand washed in cool water with mild soap.
Rinse, blot on a towel, shape and air dry.

How this hat was made for those who are curious:

I started with a handmade base of brown Merino sheep’s wool, which I laid upon a circle shaped resist. Then, I carefully laid copper and bronze colored fabrics and bits of more brown wool.
The fibers were then gently rub-a dubbed with watery mixture of natural olive oil soap. Stronger rubbing continued, until the fibers interconnected and became felt. It was a rainy day, so the hat got a bit of pre-rolling in the dryer (along with the rest of our laundry). Then, the proper rolling stage was next, to firm up. An opening was then cut into the hat and the resist was removed. Next, I rubbed a lot more on my high tech drain board and then rinsed in clean water.

Finally, the fun really began! I hand draped the felt on my balsa wood head block to form this exciting asymmetrical shape. Lastly, the hat was air dried and tiny stitches were sewn in to hold the folds and some bits of the fabrics.
