A simple hook and eye latch for your garden gate or a barn door or wherever, no nails needed just drive the spikes with a hammer. I chiseled a little line down one side before I did the twist, it adds a little interest and I like the nice long twist on this one. The hook is about six inches long.

Between larger projects I make these hooks. I'm not quite pretentious enough to call this a form of meditation, but each one gets my total, undivided attention. Each one asks questions about how the curves can relate to each other, how twists can set up a visual rhythm, how the mass of the mounting relates to the hook at the other end - and each comes up with it's own answer. It's just a hook, I know, but if you get involved there's a lot going on there.

This latch comes with a hand made (by me) square nail which will settle nicely into the square hole I drifted into the top. These traditional square nails hold harder than modern round ones and this will hold up anything one might reasonably hang from a hook this size.

The black finish is a traditional blacksmiths finish of boiled linseed oil and pure beeswax applied hot, which should stand up to many years use. I have towel hooks in my rather moist bathroom with this finish that still look good after a decade of family use.

This, and all my ironwork, was made using traditional tools, hammer and fire and anvil here in Connecticut by me alone. For better or worse, it's a product of my hand and eye, no-one else's.

You get exactly what you see in the pictures here - there is only one of these.
