Tartuensis is the embodiment of our recycling and upcycling principles. Yes, it is a notebook, but it is also part of the story about our love for books. The College series come in Wire-O binding, which is very similar to spiral binding. This allows the notebooks to lay flat on the table for better writing, sketching etc. If you are interested in more traditional, more durable hardcover notebooks, look in the "Tartuensis Classic notebooks" section of our shops.

We produce our notebooks from library discards, so no actual books were harmed in the process. For the hardcover notebooks we select only the structurally intact covers while for the College series we have some more freedom to choose the weird and the wacky ones even if there are minor defects. Also we occasionally insert random pictures in between the pages.

If you are wondering, the original text blocks end up as handmade paper (also sold in our store) or cellu-fiber, a natural insulation material. For new pages we try to use either industry leftover materials or recycled paper. Just that you know, the former is much preferred from an ecological point of view. Paper can not be re-cycled, only downcycled, meaning that the quality degrades with each cycle. Thus using leftover materials means less trees to be chopped down, less chemicals in the environment, more resources saved. Currently we are even in the process of acquiring an FSC Recycled certificate, so we really try to do our best with regards to re- and upcycling. We would be thankful if you did the same once you're done using this notebook.

As for the name — we call the series Tartuensis in homage to our home town and one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe, Universitatis Tartuensis — The University of Tartu. From K. E. von Baer, who discovered the ovum in mammals to Y. Lotman, the founder of Soviet (Tartu-Moscow) school in semiotics, Tartu has been the meeting point of great minds since 1632. We intend to keep it that way.
