My latest passion is mokume gane. Mokume gane is an ancient Japanese technique used to create mixed metal sheets with woodgrain patterns. I do this in a non-conventional way using different types of metal clay, however, when I want a particularly sleek, flawless, ultra-modern look like here, I obtain mokume gane sheets made by my "guru" Phillip Baldwin at Shining Wave metals and shape, polish and patinate them until I am happy. These earrings contains sterling silver and copper, as well as two classical Japanese alloys: shakudo and shibuichi, and the backing is entirely sterling silver. Shakudo consists of 96 % copper and 4 % pure gold. Shibuichi is an alloy of copper and silver and the compositon can vary; this one has 15 % silver. When patinated with appropriate Japanese patinas, shakudo becomes deep, dark purple and shibuichi can have many different colours varying from pale straw green to silver gray.

Japanese alloys and patinas, along with fold-forming metal, are for me personally the essence of jewellery making and this is my real passion. I will continue to learn creating different patterns and styles, and my ultimate "dream" is to go back to basics and do mokume gane in the ancient traditional way. I want to build a traditonal Japanese brick kiln in my garden for firing patinated metal embedded in sulfur to obtain the most amazing, vivid colours.

I also love the new take on geometric/art deco designs that is getting so trendy this year, and that is why I made these earrings triangular.

For artists interested in Japanese alloys and patinas, I recommend the book "Japanese patinas" by Eitoku Sugimori. It is fantastic.
