Vintage Sputnik Satellite over Globe Souvenir - Scarce

this piece is a spectator souvenir from the Russian space program and the launch of the Sputnik satellite in 1957. Russia's Sputnik satellite was the FIRST manmade object to completely orbit the Earth.

These commemorative souvenirs were given away to attendees of the launch of the Sputnik satellite, which started the great Space Race between America and Russia.

The piece illustrates the Russian satellite SPUTNIK (X-4) flying over a partial globe showing the Northern Euro-Asian continent with a vapor trail behind it. The satellite vapor trail is the word "Peace" (Mir) in Cyrillic which is the Russian alphabet. This item is marked CCCP, which is the Russian equivalent of USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). The use of CCCP on the piece rather than USSR shows that this item was manufactured for the domestic Soviet market.

The satellite itself is made of aluminum which should have four delicate steel antennas that trail behind it. This piece is missing two of the antennas. The satellite body is imprinted with the Russian hammer and sickle, which is the icon for the former Soviet Union. The body screws onto the next part. The satellite rocket trail is a stylized version of the Russian word for PEACE. It is aluminum as well. The base has a cap of gold finished metal, which is imprinted/embossed with a image of the Euro-Asian continent. The partial globe is marked with latitude and longitude lines. Additionally, it is marked 4-X 1957 CCCP. 4-X is the Russian nomenclature for the Sputnik satellite, which was launched in 1957. And finally the base is is black Bakelite. This piece measures approximately 2.5 inches from the base to the top of the satelite and is approximately the same width from one end of base and the distance to where satelite overshoots earth.

The condition of this piece is good to very good! The base and bakelite show minimal wear and the vapor trail and satellite are in very good condition. The satelite is missing two of the antenna but that in no way detracts from the uniqueness of this little terrestrail globe with flight!!

These pieces are very hard to come by as not many people give them up so this is your chance to obtain a very desriable and historical piece of history!!

As always, ENJOY!!!
