"The World is Flat" is a lovely miniature curiosity. A perfect gift for the lover of travel, the cartography enthusiast or the history buff in your life!

The map above is essentially a redrawing of the Jansson-Visscher 1650 map of Novi Belgii. ( New Belgium) The illustrations that were added to these later version are significantly differen from the original, as are the pastel color additions made to the two map. The coloring assigned differs considerable from the original 1650 Jannson-Visscher map. The flow patterns for ocean water depicted off the Cape Cod peninsula or handle are slightly different from the original too

Most notably, the detailed block print of the new worlds native inhabitants graces this version predominantly along the bottom right corner.

The Flat World Globe measures 2 7/8 inches in diameter and 2 1/2 inches deep.

The Story of the Flat Worlds

Once it was a common held belief that the world was, indeed, flat. If murderous sea monsters and sirens weren't enough, it was thought that sailing too far out to sea, one would risk dropping right off the face of the Earth.

I rather loved that idea as a child. . . many a bed/bedroom sailing vessel found itself in high seas battling creatures of the deep in those days. Later in my life, upon staring out to sea from my coastal environment, I recalled the stories I read of early explorers and can easily imagine the fear of early explorers heading out towards that distant horizon line where the world beyond just seems to vanish.

Here is a small, whimsical interpretation of that old "The World is Flat" belief rendered in polymer clay. This piece is formed and hand textured then painted with acrylic and gold pigment paints to give it an "old world" styling. The small, vintage map is attached and lightly decoupaged across the flat surface of this "half globe". The piece comes with its own small "tripod" stand for you to display it on.
