I don't know much about this item. I believe my mother brought it home with her when she returned from her mother's funeral.

UPDATE: "It's actually Yugoslavian. If you look on Google or eBay, you'll see other examples of carved Yugoslavian items. Many people think "Scandinavia" when they see these things, and for good reasons. Norse vikings were traders in the Balkan region for years, and their art influenced local art. Even Russian wood carving was influenced by the Norse. Centuries ago, warring Slavic tribes in what is now Russia, were impressed by the government and order found in Scandinavia. They invited vikings to come to Russia to help establish order there. The word Russia comes from "russ", which was an old Slavic word meaning "rowers", and it was applied to the vikings, who rowed their longships across the seas." --jagersatter on Etsy
