The Sangre de Cristo Chapel located in Cuartelez, New Mexico (near Espanola and Chimayo) is one of the most beautiful examples of rural Northern New Mexico Spanish Catholic architecture. Humble, spare, efficient, its whitewashed adobe gleaming in the sun, the old chapel still serves the small community about 30 minutes north of Santa Fe.

This cyanotype photo, taken in winter, emphasizes the long shadows stretching across the snow and the leafless tree branches casting shadows on bright side wall of the chapel. The photo has been bleached and toned with coffee, creating a visually interesting effect by adding a slight brown cast in certain areas, especially the ragged, brushy edges.

What is a Cyanotype? It's a 19th century photographic process that uses light sensitive chemicals brushed on paper, with a photo negative or assorted objects laid over it. When
exposed to sunshine or other UV light and developed in water, voila! BEAUTIFUL unique photos colored a gorgeous Prussian blue. Because they are printed on either blueprint or watercolor paper, they have a soft matte appearance, without the glossy shine of contemporary photographs. Because each photo is hand made, please expect the possibility of slight variations or imperfections – in fact, I sometimes encourage puddles, drips, and noticeable brushwork, only adding to the charm and originality of each photo.

All photographs are open edition, as each photographic presentation is, by its very nature, unique. The photograph comes unmatted, but will easily fit into a standard 11 X 14" ready-made mat (with the standard 7.5" x 9.5" inside opening.) No expensive custom matting and framing needed! By using this size, the mat will be set back a bit, and you will be able to display the beautiful, brushy edges of the photo as part of the image. Once again, please note that NO MAT is included with the purchase of this cyanotype.

The photo has been given a light, sheer coating of protective wax to give it more depth and preserve it from the elements.
