Antique Hat Trim, Made in Germany. Circa 1905 Black Woven Horsehair and Chenille MiIlinery BRAID Vintage.

This wonderful old trim is marked with the label, “Made in Germany”. It came from an auction of a Mid-west “museum”. The owner had collected since 1910's and built a museum in the late 1940's. He was into theater and may have bought some of these trims with which to make authentic hats and costumes. This is for one package of 1" wide x 12 yards, woven horsehair trim, marked with the place of origin, Germany”. I burn tested some of the fibers and they go to ash, so no synthetics. If you want authentic braid for vintage hat repair or to construct your own designs, this is special.

The pattern consists of black horsehair woven header and a narrow row of “silk” chenille worked into leading edge. It is light and airy, even when gathered into ruffles. Of course, the original gathering thread is long gone, but it is a small thing to run another one. I see this used for the base or gathered trimming of bonnets or hats, Victorian thru Edwardian. Remarkably, the horse hair has survived and I believe with careful handling, it will continue to do so if you decide to work it into a design. Keep in mind that this is original horsehair trim, 100+ years old, unused and in the original wrapper, so would be a fitting item to collect. This is my last hank of this special German made trim.
