Native American Design Shaman’s Ceremonial Breastplate – Sunset

A true status symbol, bone breastplates were originally worn as armor, for protection in battle and while hunting. They were made by special tribal breast plate makers, to the specification of the wearer, or by the directions of their shaman or medicine person. Sometimes, a breastplate had been seen in a vision or in a dream, sometimes, someone had beads or materials that held special meaning, which were given to the breast plate maker to incorporate into a one of a kind piece. For special seasonal ceremonial purposes, the chief, shaman, medicine man, important women, and elders would often wear a cross between a breastplate and a necklace, made from bone and precious beads, to portray their status and wealth.

The body of this extraordinary breastplate was made from 4” antiqued elk bone hair pipe beads, 2” buffalo bone hair pipe beads, small glass black and white pony beads, large light blue glass white heart beads, small bright red and cranberry red glass white heart beads, and blue and yellow tubular glass white heart beads. It has been strung on sinew with leather spacers for extra strength and durability. The exceptional neckpiece has been loom beaded on sinew, with glass pony beads in white, yellow, orange, reds, light and dark blues, and purples. The effect is stunningly beautiful and surprising comfortable to wear. The round glass beads rapidly warm to the skin, and their smooth surface feels fluidly sensuous, like soft flowing water against your neck.

The total length of this unique breastplate is 32” long, and because of the remarkably even distribution of its weight, it falls beautifully across the chest. It will look equally good on her as on him, for ceremonial purposes and dances, or as an adornment. This piece will elicit interest and admiration wherever it is worn.

Should you have visions of your own personalized breastplate, we would very happily design and create it for you!
